Holiday
season
follows the
first snow

Snow fallen on evergreens

While winter started a bit early with


Friday and Saturdays foot of snow,
the Christmas season will start after
Thanksgiving Thursday.
Black Friday will start in Platteville
with the Platteville Regional Chambers
Christmas in the Heartland showing of
Christmas with the Chipmunks at the
Avalon Cinema at 10 a.m. Admission is
free with a canned good. Santa Claus
will make his first area arrival in time
for the City Park Christmas tree lighting at 5 p.m.
In Belmont, Lions Club Christmas
tree sales will start at Pollers Parlor,
600 Wisconsin Ave., Friday at 10 a.m.
Belmonts first tree-lighting and Christmas carols will be held in Leahy Memorial Park (with activities moving to
the Community Building in case of bad
weather) Sunday at 5 p.m.

graduate, received a U.S.
Air Force award.

POTOSI The Village of Potosi will


lose its long-time police chief with the
retirement of Steve Alexander at the
end of the year.
The village may be losing its police
department, though not police service,
at the end of the year as well.
The villages of Potosi and Tennyson
are moving toward entering an agreement with the Grant County Sheriff s
Office to handle patrolling duties in
both Potosi and Tennyson.

The Platteville Common Council will


vote on the developers agreement for
the Library Block project this week.

Before project developers started buying properties, the Library Block bordered by West Main, South Chestnut,
West Pine and South Elm streets included the library, the Block, Scott &
Heenan Law Offices and Block Apartments (the former Cunningham Hospital), the Southwest Wisconsin Community Action Program Neighborhood

a 16-stall parking lot shared by the
library and First English Lutheran
Church.
The project has changed considerably
since a feasibility study was authorized
in December 2012. At the time, the
Community Development Block Grant
application for the study proposed, besides the new library and health clinic,

a community center and housing for


low- to moderate-income people, families and senior citizens.
The first version of the project, estimated at $19 million to $21 million in
March 2013, proposed redeveloping the
entire block for a new 22,000-squarefoot library, a hotel to the specifications
of the GrandStay Hotels chain, student
