(d) commercial, mechanical and electrical efficiencies.
6. The OCC of a dc generator when separately excited and driven at 1100

Field amperes : 0.5 1.0 1.5 2
2.5 3
3.5
O.C. voltage( V ): 61.5 123 165 198 220 238 253
If the generator is shunt connected with total field circuit resistance of
80ohms, determine
(a) The no load emf and
(b) The output resistance when the terminal voltage is 200 V, if the armature

7. A long shunt compound generator delivers a load current of 50 A at 500 V.
Its armature resistance is 0.05 ohm, series field resistance of 0.03ohm and
shunt field resistance of 250ohms. Calculate the generated emf neglecting
brush drop.

8. A separately excited generator when running at 1200 rpm supplies a

current of 200A at 125 V to circuit of constant resistance. What will be the
current when the speed drops to 1000 rpm if the field current is unaltered?
Armature resistance is 0.04 ohm and the total voltage drop at the brushes is
2V. Ignore the change in armature reaction.
9. The magnetization curve of a d.c. shunt generator at 1500 r.p.m. is:

1.6
2.0 2.4 2.8 3.0
E0 (V) : 6 60 120 172.5 202.5 221 231 237 240
For this generator find (i) no load e.m.f. for a total shunt field resistance of
100 ohms (ii) the critical field resistance at 1500 r.p.m. and (iii) the
magnetization curve at 1200 r.p.m. and there from the open-circuit voltage

the armature current. Allow 1.0 V per brush for contact drop.
11. A 4-pole 50 KW, 250 V wave wound, shunt generator has 400 armature

armature conductors and 140 commutator segments. Its full-load efficiency
is 88% and the shunt field current is 1.57A. If brushes are shifted backward
through 1.5segments from the geometrical neutral axis, find the
demagnetizing and distorting amp-turn /pole.
