Unit 3: Europe in the 16th and 17th Centuries:

Background:
After the 30 Years War, 5 nations came to dominate politics within Europe for the next
couple of centuries. Spain, Portugal, and the Holy Roman Empire never recovered. In
the 16th and 17th century, the power of Nationalism began to grow. No longer did people
only define themselves by their religion or the small area they were from. Now, they
began to define themselves by their nation.
The five most powerful countries of this era, France, Britain, Prussia, Russia, and
Austria became political, military and economic juggernauts within Europe. People from
these nations had a better standard of living (in many causes) than their neighbors.
People from these nations, and others, were proud of their heritage, and these nations
dominated most of Europe until the end of World War 2.
