Why Statistics
Increasingly quantitative approach in all Sciences
e.g. use of mathematical techniques in :
9Evaluation of antipollution controls
9Improvement in the quality of products
9Analysis of the experimental data
9Inventory planning
9The analysis of traffic patterns
9The study of the effects of various kinds of
medications
9The evaluation of teaching techniques
9Analysis of competitive behavior of business
managers and government
9The study of diet and longevity etc. etc.

Probability and Statistics

In

a Probability Problem, properties of population under

study are assumed & questions regarding sample taken are
posed & answered
answered.
In a Statistics problem, characteristic of a sample are
available to the experimenter which are used to draw
conclusions about the population.
i.e. Probability reasons from population to sample (Deductive
Reasoning) whereas Statistics reasons from sample to
population (Inductive Reasoning)
