Schools, Prisons, and Social Implications of Punishment

Who is fighting for the rights for these students who grow up in these situations?
Why do we not change these implications and mindsets?
How hard is it to fight these stereotypes for students?
Why do we not change our methods of discipline to build character rather than lock up
or exclude?
This article really got me thinking of school in a really negative way. All of the attitudes
of the principal and teachers made me angry because they categorize certain students
to criminal activity and intellectual incapable. The school to prison pipeline is so real it
reinforces my crazy conspiracy theories that the powerful in our country want to lock us
up and desensitize our people. Growing up I thought that when the school suspended a
student it was just because they did not want to deal with him/her and after reading this
article I cannot help to think that was true. It was tough to read the part where the
principal says that the course of action the school took was not for the benefit of the
student but rather the school. Wow.
This article is really easy to connect with myself because since I grew up in South
Central Los Angeles I witnessed a lot of these similar attitudes; I also saw what these
types of disciplines and punishments did to student moral and character. When I was a
student in California my teachers often times did not believe that the work I provided
them was my own because of my level of understanding. It was interesting to see my
teachers appalled by my intellect since they had such low standards for me. It was
sometimes nice having low standards from my teachers because I would surpass them
and get praised for it, but now I realize that if the expectations were higher I could have
stepped up to the challenge but that was not the case.
In my future classroom I want my expectations to be high to ensure the most student
achievement. Since being in the Internship program I have been able to see a lot of
these attitudes first hand. My current IMT does not have high student expectations so
they just slack off and turn in work uncompleted. I have asked him why he does not take
the time to reach out the students and he said a lot of these kids do not care, I found
that out a long time ago. This response really disturbed me because it is obvious that
my IMT is burnt out and should reevaluate his teaching practices and methods.
