Common nouns:
Names any person, place or thing
Lower case unless at the beginning of a
sentence.
Always a single word
EX: state, president, country, team, day,
month
Proper nouns:
Names a specific person, place or thing.
Always capitalized
Sometimes more than one word
EX: Alabama, Center Point, Etc

Assessment Prompt for LA 1:


Teacher will provide three sentences with a mix of common and proper
nouns. Students will have to determine whether each noun in the
sentences are common or proper.
My brother said Rhode Island is not a state because it is
such a small square on the map.
Amy and Mark love to play basketball, and they want to
play in the National Basketball Association.
The entire crew was excited when we reached the
summit of the mountain, but tired when we reached the peak of
Mount Everest.

named Winnie the Pooh.
My family moved from New York City to Los Angeles
when my little brother, Jake was born.

Teacher will walk students through completion of page 80 in Grammar &


Writing textbook, numbers 1-8.

Assessment Prompt for LA 2:


Students will work in groups to complete page 81 in Grammar & Writing
textbook on their own sheets of loose-leaf paper to turn in for a
participation grade and formative assessment.

Common & Proper Noun Gallery Walk


Students will be placed into 4 groups of 6 students. Six anchor charts will
be hung around the room. Each chart will have a title:

State names
Languages
Important People in History
City Names
Restaurants
Other Proper Nouns

Students will walk around in groups to list as many proper nouns on a


single chart in five minutes. Each group will be presented with its own
colored marker.

After students have completed the thirty minutes Gallery Walk activity,
students will go back to their desks, and the teacher will place one of the
charts on the desks for groups to use. Students will write as many
sentences as they can on their own paper using the proper nouns on the
