GROUP - I
Marks : 10 x 3 = 30

1. Define Units and Standards. Classify the Standards.


2. Differentiate between sensitivity and resolution.
3. Define any two intrinsic constants of a DArsonval Galvanometer.
4. The coil of a measuring instrument has a resistance of 1 and the full-scale deflection of
the instrument is 300 V, when a resistance of 5999 is connected in series. Find the
range of instrument when used as an ammeter with a shunt of 1/499 .
5. Define is Ratio Error and Phase angle error of a CT.
6. State the need for lag adjustment in Induction type Energy meter.
7. Write the general procedure for balancing AC bridges.
8. State the principle of operation of Hall Effect sensors.
9. State the reason why Platinum is chosen as resistance temperature standard?
10. Tabulate the advantages and disadvantages of digital Indicating meters.

14. a) A wheat stone bridge has equal resistance as arms of the bridge at 1000 . Voltage
applied to the bridge is 10 V and galvanometer resistance is negligible. If the

galvanometer can detect a current 0.1Na, Calculate the smallest change in


resistance that can be detected.

b) Draw the circuit diagram of a Maxwells bridge to measure self inductance. Explain its
operation and derive the bridge balance equations. Draw the phasor diagram.

17. a) Explain the construction and working of Electrodynamometer type wattmeter. Derive
the expression for torque in a Electrodynamometer type wattmeter.

b) A strain gauge is bonded to a steel beam of 0.1m long and has a cross sectional
area of 4 cm2. Youngs modulus for steel is 207 GN/m2. The strain gauge has an
unstrained resistance of 240 and gauge factor of 2.2. When load is applied, the
resistance changes by 0.013 . Calculate the amount of force applied to the beam.
