    Fibrosis, asthma, and emphysema are respiratory diseases that can be caused by smoking, infections, dust, pollen, and air pollution. Fibrosis causes thickening of alveolar walls and loss of elasticity, making gas exchange more difficult. Asthma involves inflammation of the airways and constriction of the bronchioles from histamine, making breathing labored. Emphysema destroys alveolar walls, reducing lung surface area for gas exchange and the ability of the lungs to exhale fully. All three conditions can cause shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, and fatigue.
