Recent Updates and

Changes in the Media
Center
As you know, the Media Center here
at Weldon STEM High School Career
Academies is receiving a makeover.

Light bulbs were added over the

summer to improve lighting and
accent lighting is being added as
well. Since school opened, the walls
have been painted and new carpet
has been installed.
New furniture is scheduled to arrive
in early November.
The Media
Center will feature an area for
professional development, cafe
tables and stools, a raised seating
area for eight desktop computers, a
booth, a new circulation desk, and
two leisure areas for students and
staff (sample chair currently in
Media Center).
Throughout the year, we hope to
acquire additional new books and

electronic items for student and

staff use.

front walls. Most shelves include a

front-faced book to grab the
attention of our students.

With the exception of reference

materials, books may be checked
out for 14 days (does not include
weekends and days school is closed).
Library fines have been eliminated
to further encourage check out.
Students with late books may simply
renew the book for an additional 14
days.

Alicia Fleming

Last year, all libraries in Weldon City

Schools migrated to the Follett
Destiny circulation system.
Unfortunately, when the switch was
made the inventory was lost. As a
result, there were zero books in the
system. I am working to add each
book into the Follett system while
also evaluating which books to weed
from the collection.
Books are weeded due to their age,
condition, quality of information,
and relevance to the curriculum.
There are many books that will not
be added back to our collection. Dr.
Wells has approved that these items
be donated to the Town of Weldon
public library. Faculty and staff are
welcome to have any discarded
books before the books are removed
from the campus. If interested, feel
free to stop by throughout the day.
Although check out may take a little
longer than usual, students and staff
are encouraged to check out items
from the Media Center. Forty-five
brand new books were added at the
beginning of the school year. Books
selected were award-winning books/
popular books with starred reviews.
All of them appeal to reluctant
readers.

Shelving
Every book in the Media Center has
been reshelved.
There are two
distinct sections for teachers:
a
section of class sets of novels and a
section of textbooks, workbooks,
and other resources for subject
areas.
Consider visiting these
sections when planning your lessons.
The reference section is now in a
stand alone area. It contains various
sets of encyclopedias including
World Book, Brittanica, Careers and
Vo c a t i o n a l G u i d a n c e , A f r i c a n
American Heritage, and American
History.

Student visits

Courtney Pitchfork

It is exciting to see all the updates

being made for our students. A few
students have already checked out
books.
Once the furniture is
installed, much of the student body
will want to utilize the school
library.
In an effort to allow all students to
have an enjoyable experience,
students will be required to sign up
in advance to check out books or
have leisure time. There is a Google
form for students to visit the media
center in the morning (7:30AM 7:42AM) or afternoon (3:00PM 3:30PM). Students will be given an
advance pass with the date/time of
their visit.
No students will be
admitted without a pass. The form
can be accessed at https://goo.gl/
forms/S5IlEcvea0vafJJA3. It is also
listed as a link on the Media Centers
webpage and will be posted around
the school.

Quiz Bowl
Each year, area high schools send
representatives to Halifax to
compete in the Quiz Bowl.
Our
school has not competed in several
years.

*Students are not allowed to bring

food or drinks into the Media Center.

Halifax County librarian Ginny

Ovedahl has requested that our
school participate in this years
competition. Teams consist of eight
team members and two alternates.
