During the next week, please plan to train your staff in the following health and safety procedures. Check
off items when they are completed and return form to your faculty supervisor.
Safety and Prevention
____ Show students where the fire extinguisher is located. Discuss how to use it.
____ Teach students what to do in case of a fire or other emergency. Study chart posted in classroom of
fire evacuation procedures. Practice fire and earthquake drills and discuss how to teach these drill
procedures to the children in your classroom. Schedule where you will teach the children.
____ Check to see that the phone number for the Poison Control Center is posted on the lab telephone
and is in your cell phone.
____ Discuss setting expectation for children such as:
____ Walking (no running) in the classroom,
____ Keeping all four chair legs on the floor.
____ Staying seated when using rhythm sticks or sharp objects
(i.e. not playing with these items in in the loft).
____ Make sure all the electrical outlets have covers.
____ Children use helmets on the strider bikes
____ Supervision outdoors (South playground: teacher at the alleyway, south east point, watch north gate
and play area, garden and retaining wall, north playground: supervision in the treehouse, by the play
structure and gate, and one at the north end stairs and slide.).
____ Teach staff how to supervise woodworking area (discuss how many children to allow in space;
wood must be in vise when sawed, never held; goggles must be worn when in woodworking area;
put equipment away when finished, if neededmake illustrations to indicate where materials
should be stored)
____ Teach staff that bean bags, furniture, and other stepping aids should not be placed on upper floor of
loft.
Accidents
____ Discuss who should be told when an accident occurs.

First Aid Kit

____ Check for fever, running nose or nausea at the door
____ Practice correct hand washing procedure and decide how you will teach children.
____ Show students how to prepare bleach solution. Teach them that A.M. lab makes fresh solution each
day, and P.M. lab dumps solution at end of lab.
____ Teach correct way to wash and sanitize counters and tables (wash with warm soapy water, spray
bleach solution, let air dry or wipe with paper towel)
____ Teach how to correctly wash and sanitize dishes.
____ Make a list of special medical conditions of any children, including allergies. Turn in list with this
assignment.
____ Show students where rubber gloves are located and teach them how to remove contaminated gloves.
Teach when gloves must be worn.
____ Teach students how to change diapers and wet/soiled pants.
