Kiwiana Icon - Haka

History
- It was traditionally used to prepare for battle and was either performed on the
battlefield before fighting the enemies, or when the war party was leaving their village to
go battle.
- The haka was originally composed in the early 19th century by Ngti Toa Rangatira
tribes chief Te Rauparaha.
- It used to be called Ka mate, Ka mate until 2005 when an expert haka writer called
Derek Llardelli wrote a haka for the All blacks called Kapa o Pango.

How it is used
Not only is the haka used before an All Blacks rugby game, it is also used during Mori
ceremonies and celebrations to honour guests and show the importance of the occasion.
