The House on Mango Street

Not having what you wanted may cause you to want to forget where you came from or
who you are that is what happened to the main character Esperanza who follows her desire's and
forgets who she really is you shouldnt let your desires blind you and make you forget your roots
or your loved ones. In the book The House on Mango Street Esperanza is a young teen that gets
blind by her desiree's and forgets her roots and is ashamed of them which causes her not to
appreciate her loved ones the author, Sandra Cisneros uses both figurative and literal language to
explain the main theme or central idea of the book. One of the possible central ideas of the book
is to always remember who you are and to remember where you came from. Sandra Cisneros
shows this theme by giving us some examples of foreshadowing throughout the story which
expose the theme of the book.
Cisneros used literal language, specifically foreshadowing to show how
Esperanza at the end of the story learned that to always remember where she came and also who
she is. In the book, Alicia says, Like it or not you are Mango Street, and one day youll come
back to it. (107) Cisneros is using foreshadowing to show how Alicia is telling Esperanza thats
she is always going to have a bond with Mango Street. By examining this evidence, the reader
can see that if you ever leave the place you lived most of your life, you should always remember
about it and come back.

Another example of foreshadowing that Cisneros uses in her text and to help her prove
the central idea of the book which is to always remember where you came from and who you
are. Throughout the book Cisneros writes, You will always be Mango Street. You cant erase
what you know.
(105) Cisneros uses an example of foreshadowing to tell Esperanza to always remember the
things that happened in Mango Street and telling her to always remember her loved ones. You
cant forget who you are. (105) This idea underlines that you you cannot erase your past. You
cannot forget where you came from and who you are, even though you might have not liked it.
If you ever leave the place where you lived some of your life you must never forget your
loved ones and the ones that helped you. The last example Cisneros uses to show the theme of
the book which is always to remember who you are and where you came from. In the story The
Voice states, You must remember to come back. For the ones who cannot leave as easily as
you.(105) In this quote Cisneros also uses foreshadowing to help explain how Esperanza is
being told to never forget her loved ones if she ever leaves. This quote clearly illustrates that you
cannot forget people who helped and you cannot forget who you are because you are unique the
way you are and if you ever decide to leave you must always remember your loved ones.

In conclusion I believe Cisneros is trying to teach the readers to never forget who you are and
where you came from because thats what makes you unique and thats your roots and where you
came from.Cisneros is trying to teach the readers this by giving many examples of
foreshadowing that help explain the theme which is to always remember who you are and where
you came from. An example that she gave was on was how Esperanza close friends advice her to
alway remember about Mango Street and her loved ones she also writes how many of her friends
and people who love her try to open her eyes and make her realize she is taking the wrong path.

Cisneros is trying to teach us that sometimes desiring something is okay but when you get
obsessed it can cause you to forget who you really are and it can also make you lose you essence.

Double check the format before turning in essays. I'm not sure what happened in the second
paragraph?
Remember to remove personal pronouns.
Good job explaining with clearer details!
