First Grade Newsletter

November 2016
First Grade Days Are
Happy Days!
Reading/Writing
We are continuing with a reading unit called Building Foundations. The students are
learning various reading strategies. The students will begin to the authors craft. We will
also continue to blend words with the digraphs and dipthongs. We will also explore
word families. The students will continue to practice writing personal narrative stories
as well as informational stories. We will write about the themes for current events for
November. Election Day, Veterans Day, and Thanksgiving will be some of the topics
that will be integrated into reading and writing. We encourage you to have your child
use the computer programs that are available to help build reading skills through Clever.
Math
We will begin a unit about solving story problems. The students will learn how to
identify key words in the story problem to determine the operation needed to solve it.
The students will also show strategies for solving the story problem. Please have your
child practice basic math facts at home. Also use the available online resources like
Dreambox, sumdog, and xtramath for additional math practice at home.
Science/Social Studies
We will explore units related to the upcoming holidays in November. We will learn
about the process of voting as it relates to Election Day. We will learn about the history
of Thanksgiving. We will be giving you more information about the culminating activity
at the end of the unit.
