Do you feel safe at school?

Student Poll

By: Escher Sutherland, Staff

School shootings are becoming more of a
common threat in American schools in recent
years, with a reported 131 schools shootings in
the U.S. since 2000. On August 30th, 2016, two
students brought a gun into Roosevelt, completely undetected by any staff or outside students.
The student then posted the gun on social media.
Students immediately reported the two boys to
the staff and the students and gun were apprehended. Luckily, the students didnt shoot the
gun on campus or hurt anybody, but the potential
was there. Due to these events at Roosevelt, the
Roundup staff did a poll asking 30 Roosevelt
students and five teachers if they feel safe while
at school.

Much to our suprise, a majority of both
students and teachers feel safe at school even
after the incident. In my opinion, I agree with
the majority, the madness that revolves around
the threat of school shootings can sometimes
be exaggerated. Its always great to be prepared
and safe but we blow up the threat of school
shootings so much its basicaly fear mongering,
drilling it into our heads that were under constant threat of a shooting happening. As long as
students and teachers feel safe at school then I
guess it doesnt really matter what happens. It
feels good that both students and teachers have
faith in our school to protect us and educate us
about safety in school.
