President Pranab Mukherjee has conferred the countrys highest peacetime gallantry award Ashok
Chakra to Lance Naik Mohan Nath Goswami posthumously. On the eve of 67th Republic Day
celebrations President has approved 365 Gallantry awards and other Defence decorations to Armed
Forces personnel and others. It includes one Ashoka Chakra, 4 Kirti Chakras and 11 Shaurya Chakras.

The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 Passed
The Juvenile Justice Act, which allows children aged 16 to 18 years and in conflict with law to be tried as
adults in cases of heinous offences, finally comes into force on January 15, 2016.
The Act, was passed by the Rajya Sabha in the winter session of parliament, received President Pranab
Mukherjees assent on December 31, 2015.
The Ministry of Women and Child Development has passed orders stating that the Juvenile Justice (Care
and Protection of Children) Act 2015 will be enforceable from January 15, 2016.
Under the Juvenile Justice Act 2015
Juveniles between 16 and 18 years of age, who are found guilty of committing heinous offences
through a preliminary inquiry by the Juvenile Justice Board, will be sent to a childrens Court that
can pronounce the child guilty.
Such Juveniles can be detained in a place of safety until they reach the age of 21.
If still not found to have been reformed by 21, they can be sent to jails housing adults.
It specifies imprisonment up to seven years and fine up to Rs. 1 lakh for giving a child any
intoxicating liquor, narcotic, drug, tobacco and psychotropic substances.
Odd-Even scheme Launched

The ambitious odd-even scheme, set to roll out from January 1, will have out of its ambit CNG-certified
vehicles, two wheelers, cars being driven by women drivers and those carrying the differently abled,
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said. Violators would attract a penalty of Rs 2,000, he said. The car
rationing scheme would be applicable from 8 AM to 8 PM on all days except Sunday and on cars with
NCR and other states registration number plates, Kejriwal said. Cars being driven by a woman alone or

20 Smart Cities Announced

Urban development minister M Venkaiah Naidu announced the first list of 20 cities to be developed as
Smart Cities, with Bhubaneswar topping the list and Pune and Jaipur coming in second and third
respectively.
The others on the list include Surat, Kochi and Ahmedabad.
These cities will be developed to have basic infrastructure through assured water and power supply,
sanitation and solid waste management, efficient urban mobility and public transport, IT connectivity, egovernance and citizen participation.
These are the 20 cities named in the first list
Bhubaneswar, Pune, Jaipur, Surat, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Jabalpur, Visakhapatnam, Solapur,
Davanagere, Indore, New Delhi, Coimbatore, Kakinada, Belgaum, Udaipur, Guwahati, Chennai,

The government plans to build these smart cities by 2022 to help accommodate its swelling urban
population, which is set to rise by more than 400 million people to 814 million by 2050.
The Centre and states will equally split the overall cost of the project estimated at Rs 96,000 crore. The
central government will provide on an average Rs. 100 crore per chosen city per year. The project cost of
each smart city will vary depending upon the level of ambition, model, capacity to execute and repay.

A currency swap is a foreign-exchange agreement between two institutions to exchange aspects
(namely the principal and/or interest payments) of a loan in one currency for equivalent aspects of an
equal in net present value loan in another currency.
Currency swaps are over-the-counter derivatives, and are closely related to interest rate swaps.
However, unlike interest rate swaps, currency swaps can involve the exchange of the principal.
The main uses of Currency Swap
Currency swaps have two key uses:

electronic payments convenient and secure.

Reserve Bank of India in partnership with 10 other banks released the first Unified Payments Interface
(UPI) app. Using this, meteoric rise of smartphone users and bank account holders in the country,
payments will become comparatively easier from the bank to anyone else.In order to tackle the growing
problems of cash, card, and cheque payments around the country, the National Payments Corporation
of India (NPCI) along with the direction of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan have
devised a new Unified Payments Interface (UPI).
Supports the growth of e-commerce, while simultaneously meeting the target of financial
inclusion.
The UPI is expected to further propel easy instant payments via mobile, web, and other
applications.
The payments can be both sender (payer) and receiver (payee) initiated and are carried out
in a secure, convenient, and integrated fashion.
This design provides an ecosystem driven scalable architecture and a set of APIs taking full
advantage of mass adoption of smartphone.
Capabilities include virtual payment addresses, 1-click 2-factor authentication, Aadhaar

integration, and use of payers smartphone for secure credential capture.

What is Unified Payment Interface (UPI) ?

It is a payment system that will allow you to use a mobile phone to make money transfers. A virtual
debit card, if you will.
What is the difference between UPI from other banking apps?
Every bank requires you to download its app. So, if you have two bank accounts, you will find yourself
needing two apps on your smartphone. But, with this interface, the customer needs to download only
one app. The UPI interface will network all the banks together and make it possible for the customer to
make her transactions using a single app.
How transactions happened in UPI?

It is said that using UPI, customers can create a unique financial identity that would be linked to the
bank account at the back end of the bank. So, for making transactions, you, as a customer, would need
to share only this identity and not your bank account details for making payments or transactions. Using
the unique identity, NPCI would direct the transaction to the linked bank account and the bank would
apply the relevant transaction at its end.

Do I need to disclose my bank account details for UPI?

Transactions on websites, especially shopping sites were multiple layer connections that exist between
the shopping site, payment gateway and the bank. UPI seeks to make the connections simpler and
quicker so that the process becomes more efficient and shoppers can make instant payments.
While making the payment, the customers have to select the bank account, type in the amount to be
paid, enter the recipients unique ID, and click on send. A mobile PIN will be generated to authenticate
the payment and it will be done.
Working of Unified Payment Interface (UPI):
The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Law 2015

Parliament recently passed the insolvency and bankruptcy law 2015 which is being regarded as a big
financial reform which was required for a long time. This law expeeds the process of winding of the
company under clear rules and regulations. Here we comes with an explanation of the whole law.
Explanation of the law.

This law basically makes it easier for the banks, supplier, or employee to take the assets of a company
who defaults from a loan, payments. Anyone who owned money by a company, be it a supplier,
professional who is basically a charted accountant. The charted accounting will immediately call for a
calm period (A time when no one will ask money from the company) and will hold the meeting of all the

Company Law Tribunal. The tribunal if it finds the application worthy will appoint an insolvency

employee or bank and finds that the company has defaulted on the payment he can go to the National

creditors and access the complete required amount from the company and analyses the assets being
held by the company. If 75% of the creditors deny giving the company more money and believing that
the company cannot continue, the company will have 6 months time to pay her dues, else the company
will automatically go into liquidation and dues are settled in this fashion

Different Type of Accounts in banks

Primarily Banks have 4 types of accounts
Saving Bank Accounts: They are the most common accounts in banks. They can be opened by any
customer, and yield a minimum rate of interest from the bank. For opening a saving bank account the
basic necessity is you Adhaar Card/ Voter ID/ Driving license/ Passport/ Pan Card.
There are different categories of saving bank accounts from Banks to banks which yield different interest
and provide different facilities as per their category. The famous Jan Dhan Accounts are an example of
saving bank accounts.
Current Accounts:: Current Accounts are usually corporate/salaried accounts. Banks don't yield any
interest on these loans. Current accounts are usually high transaction accounts, maintained by
companies. Banks offer many other facilities on current accounts like free transactions etc. To open
current accounts different documents are required. It ranges from Aadhaar Card/ Voter ID/ Driving
license/ Passport/ Pan Card , Certificate of incorporation, local authority certificates etc.

gets interest according to the time interval. If a fixed deposit is closed before maturity, banks take
charges for the premature closure. Maximum tenure for a fixed deposit can be 10 years
Recurring Deposit: In this type of deposit a customer and the bank comes to an agreement that a
customer will deposit a fix amount of money for a fix duration. After completion of the duration, the
customer will get the total amount with interest from the bank. This scheme was launched to enhance
more saving by people in small amounts on a regular basis.
Tax Saver Deposits: These deposits are made to save taxes. They can be opened for a maximum amount
of 1.5Lacs and have a locking period of 5 years. Against these deposits the customer can reduce his
