B RA N C H ES
President of Guatemala
Jimmy Morales in office since January 2016. The
president is the head of state, and the head of the
government. Can only be in office for one term.
Executive Power
Has authority and is responsible for the government
actions of the state. They enforce and execute the
law.
Legislative Power
Congress of the Republic. Takes part in the separation
of powers of the government and they enact
legislation. 158 members elected for a 4-year term.

Judiciary
Constitutional Court. Takes part in the matters that
effect and concern the countrys constitution.
Divisions
22 departments with governors appointed by the
president. Guatemala City and 333 other cities/towns
are governed by citizen elected mayors or town
leaders.

CURRENT EVENTS
Political Crisis
Many political figures have resigned and left congress
within the past few months due to the assumption
and investigation of a corruption assumed to be led
by the president.
