The patterns of the opening titles, in relation to each other

introduce the production company. The film then shows for
example, Lionsgate presents before the title of the film
appears. This will establish the popularity of the film because
production companies such as Universal hold a prestigious
reputation for making high grossing films.

In animated openings such as Kung Fu Panda

& Alice in Wonderland, the fonts have to be
bright colours with a bold font style because
for younger audiences, they value the art of
animation that catches their eyes
immediately when they see texts. For
younger audiences under the age of 12
especially, they may not be wide readers so
they have to be attracted to the font style of
the technical information involving the
production companies such as DreamWorks
and Disney. In Kung Fu Panda, DreamWorks
are in a gold serif font, which captivates the
eyes of the young audience. The colour then
transitions into a red san serif font for the
title.

The actors are then introduced to inform the audience what the
characters image and personality is going to be, as most
actors have one specific character type they commonly play,
whether its a protagonist or antagonist.
None of the film openings, except for The Cabin in the Woods,
introduce the directors because they are very well known.
Prestigious directors such as Drew Goddard, Tim Burton & Joe
Wright have directed some of the most prominent films such as
two famous stories of Roald Dahl by Tim Burton. Hes also done
other films involving a big name in Hollywood A.K.A Johnny
Depp, such as Edward Scissor- hands & Alice in Wonderland.
Therefore, films involving such big names wouldnt always need
directors introduced in openings because the audience would
already be able to recognize who directed the film just by

Alice in Wonderland has similar font colours

in that theyre also gold but with a more rich
element. Its font is a serif style with a quirk
being added as its genre is fantasy- based.
Therefore, this suggests that gold in
particular is a valuable colour to children,
which is why the directors and producers
include such rich colours in animated film as

Sound
Narrative
In all of these openings, the setting of the films location is always established to
show the tone & genre of the film. In Kung Fu Panda for example, the mis en scene
at the beginning is a mountainous background, which could already suggest a
foreign location of the animation. This will portray to the audience that the
cartoons are of different origins e.g. the animals i.e. the panda; heron and tiger are
all from the Asian origin of species. Another example of the mis en scene being
established in the narrative is The Cabin in the Woods. An animated art of the
Cabin is already shown in the woods when the title is introduced. So the audience
already knows where most of the horrific action is going to occur. Features of the
cabin shown when the actors are introduced will also give the audience the feel of
where its most spooky and intensifying.
However, two of the openings narratives start off with the main characters
partially appearing e.g. Elle from Legally Blonde & Elizabeth from Pride and
Prejudice. These narratives portray an element of the main characters personality,
which also shows the theme of a film. A main characters qualities tell the audience
that the film may be about class i.e. Elizabeth in her old fashioned, cheap looking

Movies, particularly fantasy- based, that involve a

lot of action tend to immediately introduce their
main music in their openings. They are usually tense
because this establishes the genre of the film in
which it portrays to the audience that there will be
tense & active moments e.g. when Alice falls down
the rabbit or the Hulk going on a rampage around
the city. This is all reflected in the music; in Alice in
Wonderland, the music is orchestra based with a
choir in the background. All of these sound features
intensify by volume and its tempo, which already
intrigues the audience into the world that the film is
based in. This shows that theyll be lured into the
actions that they cannot miss in the film, which is
the selling point of a films opening.
Likewise, Hulk also has intensified music with a
laboratory twist. Since its based on science,
typically the intensity of the music indicates that a
science experiment goes wrong in the plot of the
film. The opera music further develops as typically
done in marvel films. The opening is brought to a
scene in the lab, showing that the lab is where
significant events happen. This can convey to the
audience that the lab is the key location of the film,
as in thats where the main characters alter ego is
born. Therefore, the films openings are meant to
