Finite element analysis results are sometimes output as Von Mises stresses, but it is up to the

knowledge and experience of the individual stress analyst to determine whether or not this is
appropriate. Generally, a minimum or maximum principle stress is the most appropriate, but a
Von Mises stress, when applied appropriately, is a useful tool.
