Jethro Tinker

JETHROTINKER,towhosememorythemonumentintheParkwaserected,wasbornat
NorthBritain,25thSeptember,1788.Whenabout18yearsofagethefamilymovedto
Mottram,wherehisfatherwasaschoolmaster.TheyafterwardsremovedtoStalybridge,and
hereJethrolivedwiththeexceptionofafewyearswhichhespentintheMidlandsallhis
longlifeof83years.

Hewasinhisyoungdaysahandloomweaver,butbecamemanageroverthe
weaversinacottonmillthenaninnkeeperandfinallyagardener.Heearlybeganthe
studyofNaturalHistoryinalmosteverybranch,butmainlyinBotany,Entomologyand
Orthinology.Hewasanassiduouscollectorallhislife,andpossessedanextensivecabinet
ofinsectsandHerbariumofplants.BoththesearenowintheParkMuseum,havingbeen
presentedtheretobyhisexecutors.HediedMarch10th,1871.Themonumentwaserected
bypublicsubscriptionoffriendsin1874.

Inthepursuitofhishobbyheusedtomakelongpedestrianjourneystherewereno
trainsortramsthenintothedistrictsroundabout.Hewouldthinknothingofsettingoffon
theSaturdayevening(leavingworkat4p.m.),walktoBuxtonorBakewell,collect
specimensalldayonSunday,andreturnhomeatnightreadyforhisworkonMonday
morning.

The"Brushes"washisfavouritehuntingground,buthewouldalsospeakwith
raptureofChatMossandotherplaces.Hewaswellknowntoallneighbouringworkingmen
Botanists,andhadextensivecorrespondencewithmanyeminentmeninthesubjectshe
studied.Hewasverygentleinhismanner,methodicalandregularinhishabits,temperatein
hismodeoflife,andeverreadytoimpartinformationonsubjectsheknewsomethingabout
andtoencourageotherstostudyandpursuesomesuchcourseaswasevidentlyasource
ofdelighttohim,averitable"labouroflove."

InhislateryearsheinvariablyattendedthelocalBotanicalMeetings,actingasa
refereeorumpire,andhisdecisionswerealwaysacceptedasfinal.Heobtainedmorethana
localnotorietyespeciallyasa"muscologist,"orstudentofmosses.Hewasgoodcompany,
fondoftellingatale,andfullofreminiscences.
