multipleexposurestoawordbeforetheycanfullyunderstandit.Theyalsoneedtolearnnewwordsincontext,byreading.Teacherscanemphasizeactive
processingbyhavingstudentsconnectnewmeaningstowordstheyalreadyhaveknowledgeof.Themoreexposuresstudentshavetoaword,thebetter
chancethattheywillrememberit.

1.SemanticMaps
Asemanticmapisagraphicorganizerthathelpsstudentsvisuallyorganizetherelationshipbetweenonepiecesofinformation.Researchershaveidentified

Cooperativelearningisaneffectivewayforstudentstolearnandprocessinformation.Thejigsawlearningtechniqueisaquickandeffectivewayforstudents
toworkwiththeirpeerswhilelearningkeyvocabularywords.Forthisactivityeachstudentisresponsibleforlearningthreenewwordsandteachingthose
wordstotheirgroup.Hereshowitworks:

3.WordDetective
Themostvaluablethingthatyoucandotoincreaseyourstudentsvocabularyistoencouragethemtoread.Researchshowsthatwidereadingisthemain
pathwayforwordacquisition.Thisactivityenablesstudentstoseewordsindifferentcontexts,thereforedeepeningtheirknowledge.Itrequiresstudentstofind
newwordsastheyencounterthemintheirdailyreading.Hereshowworddetectiveworks:
