AE 528 MID-TERM EXAMINATION

DUE: Monday, November 14, 2016, at 4 pm NO EXTENSIONS except for emergencies or medical conditions (signed certification required)
Instructions: Answer all questions briefly. Open book and notes. Work independently. Do not consult with anyone except Hilton. If collaboration is found
on any part of any answer, a grade of zero for the entire exam will be awarded to
all collaborators. The exam is due no later than 4 pm on Monday, November 14,
2016. 25% will be deducted from the grade for every fraction of a day the exam is
handed in late, except as noted above. This includes 11/14/16 after 4 pm.
You need not derive anything that you can find in Green & Zerna and/or class
notes as long as you reference the item properly.
1 (50%) Given:
Consider a unit nonlinear isotropic elastic cube undergoing deformations with equal extension ratios: i = x3i .
Find:
Expressions, but do not solve, for all stresses ij , metric tensors Gij and complete boundary conditions.
2 (50%) Given:
Consider the bending problem presented in class and on p. 108 of Green & Zerna.
Find:
Find expressions, but do not solve, for all stress ij and boundary conditions if the cuboid
center line is bent into a section of a hyperbola instead of a circle.
