ABSTRACT
This research work was designed to examine the utilization of library resources by lecturers
in University of Agriculture, Makurdi. The specific objectives of the study is to find out the
level of availability of library materials in the university, and determine the extent of use of
the materials by lecturers. It is also to find out the factors that impede lecturers use of the
library and make recommendations for improvement of library use. Six research questions
guided this study. A descriptive survey research design was used for the study. The
population of this study comprises all lecturers in University of Agriculture Library, Makurdi
whose number is put at 480. Out of this population 192 representing 40% of the population
was sampled. Out of the 192 questionnaire administered 153 were filled and returned
representing 80% response rate. Statistical tools used for the analysis were frequency counts
and mean scores. The major finding of the study is that there are many library resources
such as books, journals, bulletin, transactions and proceedings, research monographs,
research reports patents, technical bulletin, price lists, data sheets, dissertations,
indexes/abstracts, biographies, gazetteers, dictionaries, and encyclopedias amongst others,
in the University of Agriculture, Makurdi and that lecturers use the library mainly for
consultation of books and reference materials. They also use it for research purpose and
borrowing of books. A major findings was also that lecturers utilized books more than any
other source of information. A number of recommendations were put forward for
improvement of library use but the most prominent suggestion was that more up to date and
relevant information sources should be acquired for the library, and that the library should be
properly funded.

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the ICT resource availability necessary for teaching
ICT related courses in Library schools within South East Nigeria. This is with the aim of
finding out their problems and strategies for enhancement of teaching and learning. Six
objectives and six research questions guided the study. A descriptive survey design was
adopted in carrying out the work. Purposive sampling technique was used. The entire
population of fifty-one (51) respondents was used for the study. The instruments for data
collection were questionnaire and observation checklist. Fifty-one copies of the
questionnaire were distributed to the lecturers and ICT staff in the four Library Schools within
South East Nigeria with a 100% return rate. The following statistical measures were employed

for the data analysis: frequency table, simple percentage and mean (X). The results obtained
from the findings revealed that the extent to which ICT resources were used in the four
Library schools for the teaching of Library and Information Science (LIS) courses was seen to
be infrequent, that the frequency and percentage of the resources needed for the teaching of
ICT related courses in the four Library schools is high. Also, the ICT resources are available
in different proportions and/ or unavailable altogether. The respondents agreed with most of
the itemized problems affecting the availability of resources for the teaching of ICT related
courses in the four Library schools, that the lecturers and ICT staff in the four library schools
studied lack some basic ICT skills. Based on the research findings, it was recommended that
students should avail themselves of the available ICT resources in their institutions as a way
of enhancing their studies, learning and aiding retention. Better funding of ICT resources by
universities/government is necessary in the library schools and lecturers in Library schools
should have full ICT skill, especially in the areas of slide design and use of projectors as this
will promote learning and make it more permanent in students. Finally, there should be
adequate power supply and power back up as this is necessary for continuous ICT resources
usage.

perceived the courses as difficult with their practical which attributed to insufficient practical,
also tradition method of teaching employed by lecturers teaching the courses makes the
courses not interested. Recommendations among the students are that school should
provide a well equipped cataloguing and classification laboratory for teaching and learning.
Lecturers teaching the courses should employ new strategies for effective teaching of the
courses and theory should be balanced with practicals as well as provision of ICTs facilities
connected with internet which will change the negative attitude of students to the courses.
