CanadasautoworkersunionpickedGeneralMotorsCo.fornegotiationsthatwillformthe
basisofanewlaborcontractattheDetroitThreeautomakers,zeroinginonthecompany
withthebiggestquestionmarkoverfutureproductioninthecountry.
Unifor,whichrepresentsabout23,000autoworkersatGM,FordMotorCo.andFiat
ChryslerAutomobilesNVinCanada,willfocusitsdemandsonsecuringnewinvestment
forGMsOshawaandSt.CatharinesplantsnearToronto,JerryDias,presidentofUnifor,
toldreportersTuesday.
GMplanstocloseoneofitstwoOshawaproductionlinesnextyearandwontcommitto
schedulingproductiononnewvehiclesbeyond2019beforelabornegotiationsarefinished.
GMCanadaremains"focusedonworkingwithUnifortoreachamutuallybeneficialand
competitivenewagreement,"GMCanadaspokeswomanJenniferWrightsaidinanemail.

UniforischoosingGMasCanadasautoindustryfacesalossofinvestmentandjobsto
cheaperregionssuchasMexicoandtheU.S.,evenwithnearrecordNorthAmericanauto
salesandaweakerCanadiandollar.Canadaautooutputfellto13percentofNorth
Americaproductionlastyearfromabout17percentin2009,whileoutputinMexicohas
risentoabout20percent,accordingtodatafromWardsAutomotiveYearbook.Canada
lostmorethan53,000automotivejobsfrom2001to2014,accordingtoastudybythe
AutomotivePolicyResearchCentre.
UniforisaimingtosignanewcontractwithGMbeforethecurrentagreementexpireson
Sept.19,andthenmoveontoFordandFiatChryslertonegotiatecontractsinaprocess

hasspokenwithPrimeMinisterJustinTrudeausofficeandMinisterofInnovation,
Science,andEconomicDevelopmentNavdeepBains,andisspeakingwithOntarioPremier
KathleenWynnethisweek.
TheDetroitThreeproduced1.3millionvehicles,1.1millionenginesandaddedC$5.8
billion($4.5billion)toCanadasGDPin2015,accordingtoUnifor.
