These are readily available from a number of sources, especially now that needle felting is becoming quite popular. Experiment to soe what sort of needle, ‘work surface and wool you prefer. Wool roving and yarn Wool roving is wool that's been carded and prepared for spinning or felting. There are three main types of wool roving that I like: ‘*Merino woo! is very fine and soft. It's perfect to use for embellishing projects, You can also sculpt with merino, although it's a bit more challenging to work with in this ‘way compared to Corriedale wool. “Corriedale is a bit coarse and crimpy. but still very soft. It's great to use for embellishing projects as well as for sculpting. “Romney is best for the beginner to sculpt as it felts very easily and is a very orimpy and coarse fiber. ‘Wool yarn can be used to add dimension and detail to needile-felted projects. Foundation fabrics ‘To embellish with needle felting, you need a foundation fabric on which to work. Whether it's a ready-made item or something you'll be constructing yourself, these fabrics work best: “Woven wool fabrics, such as those ‘used for apparel, take to needle felting quite well and are available in a range of colors and patterns. *Wool felt, or felt that has at least 20 percent wool, tales to needle felting nice- ly. Don't use craft felt: It doesn't contain wool, thus it doesn’t accept needle felting very well. “Recycled wool sweaters are wonderful for needle felting. When tossed into the washer with hot water, they shrink and felt and can then be applied to any number of projects. “Cottons and linens and other natural fibers accept needle felting. | Synthetic fabrics are not recommended for needle felting. Your work will peel off 35; because the wool fibers won't bond with igiiu the fabric. = et Embellishments . . ‘There variety of embel- Design-transfer devices _isnments you can apply to ‘Tracing/transfer paper—Use to transfer your needle-felted projects to f designs to fabric. Marking pens are available in an air-soluble formula that fades within twenty-four hours. » ‘Chalk—Use to draw designs directly onto your fabric. It also brushes off easily when “ you're finished. Felting needles, multineedle tools and shaping tools ‘Steel felting needles are covered in tiny barbs and come in a variety of sizes. The type of wool you're using and how detailed you want your work to be will determine which needle you use. Felting needles typically come in these sizes: Size 36: Use this needle to compress the fibers quickly and to felt large pieces quickly. ‘This size is excellent for sculptural pieces. ‘Size 38: Use this needle to smooth the surface of the wool, to attach the limbs to teddy bears oF to appliqué. ‘Size 40 and 42: Use these needles when you don’t want to compress the fibers too much, such as to attach surface embellishments or for detailed work. ‘Most needles are available with the barbs in either a triangle configuration or a star configuration. The star configuration has more barbs, and therefore felts faster. ‘Tuse sizes 36 and 38 in almost all of my work. Try out the different sizes to find Foam work surfaces and forms ‘Dense foam at least 2° (Scm) thick is an excellent surface to felt on. It gives the needles a soft surface to poke into and ents your table—or lap—from getting injured. ‘You can use foam forms to felt around to create shapes, such as those needed for hats, bags and slippers. Once the work is felted, sim- ply remove the felt from the foam form and you have your shape. se Wool batting and stuffing Wool batting is wool that has been processed into a sheet of fibers. This is good for working on large projects, such as 8 rug (page 50). Batting is usually available in natural colors. Wool stuffing is wool that hasn't been carded and is typically used for stuff- ing dolls and animals. I use it as a “core” for sculptural projects, as it is Jess expensive than wool roving. Wire, pliers and wire cutters—a fine-gauge wire (projects specify) and -welry pliers and wire outters jewelry findings—clasps and jump rings ii 12 A rule to remember with needle felting: There are no rules! (One exception: Safety first when handling those sharp needles.) ‘There are also no complicated techniques that will get in the way of your creativity. Depending on your projects, your work can be as simple or as complex as you desire. Needle Felting There are three basic areas of technique: “Surface embellishment: Use this to add pizzazz to any appropriate fabric, clothing or other item. “Handmade felt fabric: Make your own piece of felt from scratch, then use it in any number of ways, from tiny bags to enormous rugs. *Soulptural pieces: Sculpt with wool instead of clay to make something as simple as a bead or as wacky as a full-size statue. ‘Use this basic technique for all needle-felted surface embellishments you apply to a foundation fabric. Pull wool roving Hold a rove of wool roving in your hand, and gently tp the wool roving with your ether hand to pull off @ tut Never cut the woo! roving. Apply wool roving or yarn Place the founcation fabric on a foarn work surface, then lay the tufts of wool roving in an even layer on the foundation fabric. confident. Here are a few other tips to keep you poke-free: Keep your eyes on your work—always! ‘The second you look away to watch something on TV, you'll inevitably poke your finger! + Jab the needle straight down into your ‘work, Don’t bend the needle; it can easily break. Place the lap desk on your lap, place ‘your foam work surface on the lap desk, and then you should be safe. ERA RR RERRRRAEFSO Insert needle Insert a felting needle into the woo! roving and begin 10 jab the neeie in and out through the foundation {fabric and down into the foem. Check back of fabric to ensure felting Flip the feoric or pull up # corner to see i felting is ‘occurring. As the woo! roving bonds to the fabric, you'll ‘See the wool raving come through on the other sice. 13 Free-Form Needle Felting Free-form needle felting enables you to lay wool roving in any pattern or design you desire. ‘This works well for flowing or organic designs where clean, rigid lines aren't necessary. 14 | | ‘Lay out wool roving or yarn Needle felt wool roving or yarn Form your design by lying ox tufts of woo roving in Needle ft the woo! roving o yarn by jabbing te neste ‘the desiréd shape on the foundation fabric. ‘Gown through the wool roving and the fabric.
