Maryam

Even though only 4 students were

engaged with the opening activity, it
was interesting enough to hold the
attention of the entire class.
Tr encourages sts to speak as they
are solving on the board.
The class is very relaxed and well
behaved.
Use of an award system.
The lesson was built on activities.
The final activity had sts
communicating with each other.

In the opening activity there was a

word problem. Tr selected one
student to read it, this could have
been done in groups, engaging more
than one st.
Tr repeats all words that the sts say,
making it very tr centered.
Even though sts are encouraged to
speak while solving on the board, tr
does not ask any challenging
questions to assess depth of
understanding.
Group activities were actually
individual activities done while
sitting in a group.
The pace of the lesson was very
slow and laid back.

Competency

Observations

Professionalism:

Planning for
learning:

Implementing and
managing learning:

Activities were planned and prepared for the

students .

Monitoring and
assessment:

The tr walked around while the sts were solving their

individual problems, but no documentation was seen.

Tr was in the class preparing for the lesson before the

sts arrived.
Lesson plan was completed.

Engages 4 girls at a time for opening activity.

In second activity (word problem) only one st solved. This could easily have been
a full class activity by providing small white boards. During this activity, the sts
started losing interest and fidgeting in their seats.
Groups are of 6 students.
Questioning: mostly the closed end variety.

Student engagement: Was very 1:1 but could easily be done with more active
learning.
Assessment: tr did see a fair number of sts solve, but their work was very guided
and there was no documentation .
Class management: The class was under control the entire time, tr noticed when
a group was not on task and reminded them to pay attention. The final activity
became a bit loud with raised voices and some shouting across the room, but it
was due to lack of experience in this type of activity.

Student timed for active learning: Luluwa. 2 minutes while solving her problem and
another 2 minutes for final activity but she then became disengaged and was
inspecting a fruit basket on the teachers desk with 2 other sts.
The lesson ended with the sts walking out .
