The second issue of your Brazilian Vibe

magazine has arrived and so has the winter
season in Vancouver and summer season
in Brazil. This is a time of celebration and
festivities and the Vibe team has prepared a
very special issue for you with great stories
written by a first-class team of journalists.
To warm up, we interviewed jiu-jitsu black
belt Marcus Soares who told us how he
overcame challenges in his journey in the Great
White North. To illustrate Brazils importance
in Canada, we chatted with Andr Nudelman,
super entrepreneur and current president of
the Canadian Council for the Americas, who
welcomed us to his home and shared insights
into his current endeavours.
For those who want to take a warm
vacation this winter, but are looking for
somewhere off the beaten path, discover
Paraty, a city on the coast of Rio de Janeiro
state. Its cobblestone streets and buildings
from the 18th century, along with unparalleled
natural beauty of its beaches, will warm up
your body and soul.
While many people go to Brazil to avoid
the cool weather, many others come to
Canada to work and as a consequence feel
the cold. Major Brazilian TV network, TV
Record, brought the mega production of a
new TV series called Rei Davi (King David)
to chilly B.C. and the crew was grateful to
have received a warm welcome to help
banish their weather woes.
Fernanda Cunha, international jazz singer also
left the sun behind in Rio de Janeiro to come
to Vancouver for the third time to entertain the
locals with her beautiful voice and personality.
In this issue you will also learn about the
newest MBA program offered by Simon
Fraser University in partnership with a
Brazilian university and the job opportunities
offered through the program. As usual,
we have the much-anticipated column by
Rafael Argemon, this time tackling issues
of corruption and the international image
of Brazil. In our last words section we
introduce Latincouver, a community that
unites Latinos and Canadians through music,
opportunities and culture.

changed his hometown but not his passion for education

companies, Andr Nudelman decided to bring his family
to Vancouver. Nudelman arrived in Canada in 2002
and since then he has been building and intensifying
the business relationship between Canada and Latin America,
specially with Brazil.
Andr was born in So Paulo and is a former Corinthians fan who
now cheers for Englands Chelsea thanks to his grandson who lives
in London. Since he arrived in Vancouver, this Brazilian businessman
has been searching for his place in the sun (or in Vancouvers case,
in the rain). As a result, Nudelman is now president of the Canadian
Council for the Americas, president of the Canadian Education
Services Latin America, and president of Maple Bear Latin
America, a bilingual school system, as well as holding many other
international positions.
Nudelman sat down with Brazilian Vibe to tell us his incredible
story during a long chat at his Vancouver home.

32 empresas, o empresrio Andr Nudelman decidiu
trazer a famlia para morar em Vancouver. Andr chegou
ao Canad em 2002 e desde ento vem construindo
e intensificando as relaes entre o Canad e a Amrica Latina,
principalmente com o Brasil.
Nascido na capital paulista e ex-corintiano, j que atualmente
torce pelo Chelsea, da Inglaterra, por conta de seu neto que mora em
Londres, esse brasileiro j foi logo procurando seu lugar ao sol (ou no
caso de Vancouver, lugar na chuva). O resultado que, atualmente,
Andr presidente do Canadian Council for the Americas (Conselho
Canadense das Amricas) e da Canadian Education Services Latin
America, alm de presidente para a Amrica Latina do sistema Maple
Bear de educao infantil bilngue.
E foi para contar um pouco mais sobre sua trajetria que o
discreto e simptico empreendedor recebeu-nos em sua casa em
Vancouver para um longo bate-papo.

How did your story start in Canada?

Como comeou sua histria no Canad?

I had a few private investments in Brazil, but I was sick and tired
of the quality of my life in So Paulo, where we live behind bars.
So, my family and I decided to come to Canada, or even better, to
Vancouver. When I moved here, I still had some investments in So
Paulo, but little by little, I simplified these investments and I just
kept the more manageable jobs. I began to develop a network with
people in the business circle because this is the most important
relationship to have in Canada. In this way, things started happening
and I cant complain about it. Im pretty satisfied.

Eu tinha um pequeno mundo de investimento privado no

Brasil, mas estava cansado da qualidade de vida em So Paulo,
onde se vive atrs das grades. Foi ento que decidimos vir para o
Canad, ou melhor, para Vancouver. Logo que mudei, ainda existiam
algumas coisas em So Paulo, mas aos poucos fui simplificando
esses negcios e ficando apenas com coisas fceis de administrar.
Quando cheguei, comecei a desenvolver um relacionamento com
as pessoas, participando o mximo possvel de entidades ligadas a
negcios. Hoje no posso me queixar, estou muito satisfeito.

How well did you adapt to Canada?

My family and I were at the perfect time
in our lives when we moved here. Our
daughter had been accepted to a university
in So Paulo, but she was also accepted to
UBC to study economics. Our younger son
was eight years old and our older son also
came, but today he lives in London with his
family. The process to adapt was easy for
us, but we needed time to relieve the stress
from living in a big city like So Paulo.

Nowadays, Brazil is the eighth biggest
external investor in Canada and the

working a lot on this relationship and Im
glad to be part of this project.

Why did you decide to move

during the coldest season
in Vancouver, in November?
I wanted to feel the dead of winter
because if I didnt like this season I
would have packed my bags and gone
back to Brazil that very hour. We were
stablished there, but little by little we
made our lives here.

What do you miss about Brazil?

We find everything here in Vancouver.
We make feijoada, cheese bread, flour,
guaran and pastel. What I miss most
is a tropical climate, but each place has
its culture, its values. If you are willing
to move to a new country, you need to
accept the pros and cons of the country.
Here, in Canada, we have to accept that
dusk is at 4pm in the winter, but also get
sunshine until 10pm in the summer.

What are the differences

and similarities
between Brazil and Canada?
Both countries have a large territory,
a lot of natural resources and a strong
primary sector. However, the tertiary

bureaucratic difficulties, so I had the
opportunity to invest in education here

make Brazil grow is to improve the

education system. The Maple Bear has
48 schools in Brazil and five in Mexico.
All are focused on educating the elite. It
is as important to educate the elite as
the entire population. We offer the quality
of a Canadian education, which is one
of the best in the world, and we provide
these methods for Brazilians, which is
very rewarding. We always enjoy watching
the development of our students.
What are the pros and cons
of a bilingual education?
Usually people who are against this
method are misinformed. I studied English
for 15 years in Brazil and I didnt actually
learn anything until I traveled. When a
child has this early contact with the
language it is easier. Before the age of
seven, the brain connections are being
formed and by having bilingual knowledge
the child has a better analytical capacity.
Bilingual learning is a strong trend and is
growing a lot. The parents who are able
to provide this education should enroll
their children in a bilingual school. The
only drawback of this education is the
cost. The schools need to have teachers
with a strong proficiency in English,
a large space for the school facilities
and the same curriculum that Canadian
schools require.
What are Maple Bears
future projects?
We will continue doing what we do.
Each year we add a new grade and
the next year we are going to grade
six. Maple Bear is based in Canada,
but we dont have schools here. We
have investments and schools in
many countries such as India, China,
Bangladesh, South Korea, Turkey,
Vietnam and Morocco.
Do you have any advice
for Brazilians who have
moved to Vancouver?
People have to develop and dedicate
their time to their network. We always
see Brazilians complaining about jobs and
saying: Im here and I cant find work.
An immigrant has natural difficulties
but the best way to be successful is to
build a network of contacts. A typical
job requires you to work eight hours a
day, so if you dont have a job, why not
look for a job for eight hours each day?
Most people prefer to spend two hours in
front of the computer sending resums.
Dont do it. You should invite prospective
employers for a coffee and even visit
the companies that you are interested in
working for. That is the way to do it.

Como foi sua adaptao aqui?

Estvamos no momento adequado de
nossas vidas quando mudamos. Nossa
filha tinha acabado de entrar em uma
universidade em So Paulo, mas tambm
foi aceita aqui na UBC, em economia.
Nosso filho mais novo tinha oito anos e o
nosso filho mais velho veio para c, mas
hoje mora em Londres com a famlia. A
adaptao foi muito fcil, mas teve um
tempo para tirar o stress de quem vivia em
uma cidade como So Paulo.
Por que decidiu se mudar para
Vancouver em uma das pocas mais
geladas, em novembro?
Quis pegar o auge do inverno porque,
se no gostasse, arrumava as malas e

voltava na mesma hora. Ficamos com

uma estrutura l, mas aos poucos fomos
ajeitando a vida aqui.
O que Brasil e Canad tem em comum
e quais so suas diferenas?
Ambos tem um territrio extenso,
recursos naturais abundantes e um setor
primrio forte, mas o setor tercirio no
Canad muito mais evoludo do que no
Brasil. O que o Brasil tem uma grande
oportunidade de troca com o Canad e
vice-versa. O Brasil j o oitavo maior
investidor externo no Canad. O investimento
hoje no unilateral, mas sim bilateral e
temos trabalhado bastante nessa relao.
Tenho a felicidade de estar bastante
envolvido nessas relaes.

Do que mais sente falta do Brasil?

Encontramos de tudo aqui. Fazemos
feijoada, po-de-queijo, farinha, guaran e
pastel. O que falta um clima mais tropical.
Mas cada lugar tem seus costumes, seus
valores. Se voc se predispe a mudar para
um pas, tem que estar disposto a aceitar os
prs e contras desse pas. Aqui temos 4h da
noite, mas tambm temos 10h da tarde.
Por que decidiu investir em educao?
Quando sa do Brasil estava totalmente
cansado das dificuldades burocrticas de
l. At que apareceu essa oportunidade
de investir em educao, porque a nica
maneira sustentvel de fazer o Brasil crescer
melhorar a educao. Temos 48 escolas
no Brasil e cinco no Mxico. So escolas

voltadas para a elite, mas to importante

educar a elite quanto educar a populao
toda. Oferecemos a qualidade da educao
canadense, que uma das melhores do
mundo, e levamos essas melhores prticas
para os brasileiros, o que extremamente
gratificante. Sempre ficamos emocionados de
ver essas crianas evoluindo.
Quais so os prs e contras de uma
educao bilnge?
Normalmente as pessoas que so contra
no tm informao necessria. Estudei
ingls por 15 anos e no aprendi nada.
S aprendi quando viajei, mas quando a
criana tem esse contato cedo mais fcil.
Antes dos sete anos as conexes cerebrais
da criana esto em formao. Tendo
uma informao bilngue, ela tambm tem
uma melhor capacidade de anlise. uma
tendncia muito forte e est crescendo
muito. Os pais que podem, devem matricular
seus filhos em uma escola bilngue. O nico
ponto contra o preo porque temos que ter
professores com proficincia em ingls, mais
espao nas escolas, e essas coisas que o
modelo canadense pede.

Quais so os projetos futuros da Maple

Continuar fazendo o que ns fazemos.

Agregamos uma srie por ano. Ano que
vem estaremos no grade six (sexta srie
do ensino fundamental). A Maple Bear
sediada no Canad, mas no temos escolas
aqui. Temos operaes e escolas em diversos
pases, como ndia, China, Bangladesh, Coria
do Sul, Turquia, Vietn e Marrocos.

Qual dica voc daria ao brasileiro

que chega a Vancouver?
A pessoa tem de dedicar-se a criar
uma rede de contatos. Sempre vemos
brasileiros reclamando e dizendo: Estou
aqui e no tenho emprego. O imigrante
tem as dificuldades naturais e o melhor
caminho desenvolver esses contatos. A
pessoa quando arruma emprego trabalha
oito horas por dia. Ento por que ela no
procura emprego oito horas por dia? Ela
prefere ficar por duas horas na internet
mandando email com currculo. No
faa isso, convide para tomar caf, v s
empresas. Esse o melhor caminho.

The Executive MBA of the Americas prepares

of the other partner schools and to share
experiences with the local students.
Each school offers highly qualified

credentials. In Brazil the partner institution is
Fundao Instituto de Administrao (FIA),
which has offered MBA programs for more
than 18 years and graduated more than eight
thousand students.
Shirley Soares, responsible for FIAs
Executive MBA, believes that the practical
experiences provided through international
projects, work and studies are extremely
valuable to the participants and their
respective companies in the development of
international projects.
The opportunity to network in groups with
approximately 75% of international students

helps them to build international careers and,

consequently, to lead their companies with
projects at a global level.
Each institution will select an average
of 15 students from a wide array of
backgrounds. The program lasts 19 months; in
the first 12 months of the EMBA, each of the
four universities will be responsible for their
own curriculum. In the second year, four
immersions of intensive nine days will take
place in the other participant countries.
The teams will study and learn about local
entrepreneurial methods and each school will
offer exclusive content based on the main
strengths of their own national economies.
SFU, for instance, will focus on cross-cultural
communication, global business strategies and
human relations, while Brazils FIA will target
sustainability issues, corporative and social
responsibilities and strategy for rising markets.
The United States will represent innovation
and strategic entrepreneurship and in Mexico,
international competitiveness and family
business management.
At the final stage of the program,
students will have the opportunity to
experience and work together on a
multicultural project of global dimensions.
With such innovative curriculum, the program
offers solid conceptual and practical tools for
students to work internationally, as well as

opportunities to share their experience with

one another.
Brazilian Marcel Bosio, a recent
University of British Columbia graduate
with a double major in computer science
and psychology, believes that this EMBA
offers great opportunities in the work field.
Ive lived in Colombia, Venezuela, the
United States and now Canada, and I was
interested in learning more about the MBA
because it offers students the opportunity to
work with extremely qualified professionals
all from diverse fields, said Bosio.
Students in this program are
predominantly in their mid-30s, with six
to ten years of professional experience
and are arising international students,
participating in EMBA and part-time
MBA programs, with five or more years
of professional experience in information
technology, mining, administration and
other sectors.
The program costs CAD$48,500 and
many of its students are on full or partial
scholarships from their employers. The EMBA
is internationally known as Master in Business
Administration, and is certified by the
Association of MBAs, having its headquarters
located in England. All the Universities in the
partnership offer a unified certification of the
international stages.

Paraty, on the coast between the major

Brazilian cities of Rio de Janeiro and
So Paulo, is a jewel encrusted within
the mountain range of Serra da Bocaina.
Surrounded by Atlantic Forest and numerous
waterfalls, the city faces the calm waters of
Ilha Grande Bay. The region is dotted with 65
islands that offer stunning deserted beaches
and turquoise blue waters.
However, Paratys historical city centre
is perhaps its most important attraction and
the main reason why the city became widely
known. Its colonial era churches and houses
have been protected by Brazils National
Heritage institute of Arts and History
(Iphan, in Portuguese) since 1958 and the
municipality has been considered a national
heritage site since 1966. In the past, Paraty
was an important port. It was from there
that gold from the state of Minas Gerais and
coffee from the Paraba Valley were exported.
Its easy to forget the hectic pace of
the 21st century and dive into the rhythm of
another era, as calm as the
surrounding ocean, when one
is in Paraty. Buildings from the
18th and 19th centuries have
been preserved to resemble
their original appearance. There
are no modern houses and

cars are only allowed to circulate through

the narrow streets of the old city at specific
dates and times during the week.
Distances are short in the historical part
of Paraty and it is possible to walk through
the entire old city in a few hours. However,
it is better to take your time to admire the
architecture and visit the numerous art
galleries and stores. In any case, the irregular
pavement from the 18th and 19th century,
called p-de-moleque (boys foot), forces
everyone to walk slowly in order to avoid
spraining an ankle.
MASONIC SYMBOLS
A curiosity about Paraty is that many
Masonic codes and symbols are hidden
within its architecture. Like the city of
bidos, in Portugal, Paraty was urbanized by
freemasons. Even the churches have Masonic
symbols. The citys main church, Nossa
Senhora dos Remdios, built in 1754, has the
symbol of the Masonic Order of the Knights

Hospitaller at its entrance. Finding it is easy:

look for the image of a vase with three
branches coming out of it.
Another sign of Masonic presence are the
three pillars present in many intersections.
They are always just three pillars, leaving a
street corner without one. This forms the
symbol delta, or a triangle. There are also
many houses in Paraty painted white and
blue, symbolizing the colours of freemasonry.
FROM CHURCHES TO FALLEN ANGELS
Paratys churches have a rich history.
There was a church reserved for blacks
called Rosrio Church. Even today this church
celebrates the feast of the Coronation of
the Black Kings every November. The main
church was for whites, and now it hosts the
Feast of the Divine, in honour of the Holy
Spirit, every June. There was a chapel for
women called Nossa Senhora das Dores,
and, finally, the church which became the
citys postcard image, Santa Rita, was for
mulattos, or people of mixed
Portuguese and African
ancestry. Facing the port,
this iconic temples full name
was Santa Rita dos Pardos
Libertos, or Saint Rita of the
Free Mulattos.

foi uma importante cidade porturia. De

As distncias so pequenas na parte
histrica e possvel percorr-la inteirinha
em algumas horas. Porm, vale a pena
andar com calma, parando para admirar
a arquitetura, as galerias de arte e as
lojinhas. De toda forma, o calamento
irregular dos sculos 18 e 19, chamado de
p-de-moleque, obriga todos a andarem
devagar para no torcer o tornozelo.
SMBOLOS MAONS
Uma curiosidade sobre Paraty que
muitos cdigos e smbolos maons esto
escondidos na arquitetura da cidade.
Assim como bidos, em Portugal, Paraty
foi urbanizada por maons. At nas
igrejas h sinais da maonaria. Na matriz,
a Nossa Senhora dos Remdios, construda
em 1754, um smbolo da ordem manica
dos Cavaleiros Hospitalares enfeita a
entrada. Ach-lo fcil: procure um pote
de onde saem trs ramos.

DE IGREJAS E ANJOS TORTOS
A histria das igrejas de Paraty rica. Havia
uma s para negros: a do Rosrio. Ainda
hoje, celebra-se nela, em novembro, a Festa
de Coroao dos Reis Negros. A matriz era
a dos brancos. Ali, ocorre a Festa do Divino,
em junho. Havia tambm a capelinha das
mulheres, a Nossa Senhora das Dores. E a
igreja carto-postal da cidade, a Santa Rita, de
frente para o cais, era o templo dos mulatos.
Seu nome completo, alis, Santa Rita dos
Pardos Libertos.
Segundo uma lenda sobre o nome de Paraty,
a cidade intocada pelo diabo porque foi um
presente a Satans. Deus teria dado um pedao
de terra para cada santo. Satans ficou sem
nenhum e perguntou: E para mim?. Nisso, Deus
apontou e disse: Esta para ti. Verdade ou no,
Paraty segue sendo um lugar abenoado.

Marcus Soares arrived in Canada in March

1997 with the not so modest status of being
the only jiu-jitsu black belt in the country.
In addition, as Carlson Gracies disciple,
Soares brought with him the renowned and
respected Gracie name which was already a
legend in the world of martial arts. Even with
all his prestige, the beginning of a new life
in Canada turned out to be full of barriers
which he had to take down one by one, as he
had done with his opponents on the mat.
It started in 1996 in Rio de Janeiro when
one of Soares students invited him to be
a teacher at a gym in Aldergrove, B.C. The
owner of his gym in Rio de Janeiro supported
Soares so much that he became his first
sponsor employer in Canada. Although he
was settled with a good life in Rio, holding 5
different jobs and living in the famous beach

of Copacabana, Soares accepted the offer

in BC. His first frustration came as soon
as he arrived: the gym where he would
be working was very small and the few
students wouldnt be enough for him to
support himself.
The first three months in Canada were
the worst in my entire life, recalled Soares.
I had recently lost my mother, was away
from my daughter, family and friends and I
still didnt have a good grasp of English. To
adapt to a new country and new culture
with a different lifestyle was very difficult. I
frequently had insomnia and nightmares.
As time went on and reputation spread,
more students joined his team, but Soares
knew he needed something more stable.
When an opportunity to replace a Japanese
jiu-jitsu instructor at the Vancouver Olympic

Gym came up, Soares didnt miss the chance

to teach over 40 more students. There, Soares
was able to teach and get to know students
from all over the world, opening many doors
in his life.
One of his students proposed that they
open a new gym in the area. Soares, promptly
accepted the offer and the pair launched
Columbia Martial Arts gym in Burnaby, but he
soon had a bitter surprise. What was supposed
to be a partnership ended up being another
nightmare. Soares, said that once the gyms
doors were open, his former student took
advantage of Soares immigration status, which
required him to be employed by someone in
order to keep his visa valid, and took over the
entire company to himself. As a result: the
Brazilian had to work below his partner for
18 months until the contract ended before he

Eu tinha recm perdido minha me,
estava longe da minha filha e da minha
famlia, dos amigos, e sem falar ingls direito.
Adaptar-se vida no novo pas, nova cultura
e estilo de vida foi muito difcil. Eu tinha
insnia e pesadelos, toda noite.
Com o tempo e a fama do professor
mais alunos apareceram, mas ele sabia que
precisava de algo mais slido. Foi quando
surgiu a oportunidade de substituir um
professor de jiu-jtsu japons na academia
Vancouver Olympic Gym aonde ele teve

mais de 40 alunos. L, Marcus teve a

oportunidade de conhecer alunos do mundo
todo que por consequncia abriram muitas
portas em sua vida e um de seus alunos o
convidou para abrir uma academia na regio.
Marcus aceitou o convite e abriu a academia
Columbia Martial Arts, em Burnaby, mas teve
uma amarga surpresa. O que era para ser
uma sociedade acabou se transformando
em um outro pesadelo. Marcus conta que,
depois de instalada a academia, o ex-aluno
aproveitou-se da condio imigratria de
Marcus, que precisava de um empregador
para garantir seu visto, e assumiu o controle
total do negcio. Resultado: o brasileiro
teve que trabalhar duro por um ano at
terminar o prazo do contrato e s depois
abriu uma nova academia com seu terceiro
e ltimo empregador. Marcus finalmente
recebeu seu visto definitivo em 2002.

O brasileiro Marcus Soares chegou ao

Canad em maro de 1997 com o status
nada modesto de ser o nico faixa-preta
de jiu-jtsu do pas. E no s isso: como
discpulo de Carlson Gracie, ele trazia para
c o famoso sobrenome que j era lenda nas
artes marciais no mundo afora. Mesmo com
todo o prestgio, o comeo de vida no novo
pas se mostraria cheio de desafios, que ele
teria que vencer um a um, tal como fazia
com os oponentes no tatame.
Em 1996 Marcus foi convidado para dar
aulas em uma academia em Aldergrove,
Colmbia Britnica, por uma aluna que
treinava com ele no Rio de Janeiro. Marcus
teve muito apoio do dono da academia
onde ensinava no Rio de Janeiro, que
se tornou seu primeiro empregador no
Canad. Mesmo muito bem instalado
no Rio de Janeiro, na famosa praia de

was able to open another gym with his third

and final employer. Soares finally received his
permanent residence in 2002.
After leaving Columbia Martial Arts gym,
Soares began bringing Carlson Gracies jiu-jitsu
to several other gyms in the region. Today,
at the age of 55, he is partner in two gyms
one in Langley and another one in Maple
Ridge. He teaches many students of different
ages and professions, including firefighters,
police officers, security personnel and even
renowned professional fighter, Denis Kang, the
vice-champion (under 83kg) at the MMA Pride
Fighting Championship, 2006.
Students at Soares gyms are diverse
and from a range of backgrounds. Soares
said that children as young as five years
old can start training in jiu-jitsu as long as
they are taught by qualified instructors.

It is crucial to check your instructors

background, Soares recommended.
His own qualifications are well known by
the students: eighth degree black belt (on a
scale of nine degrees) and the best ranked
instructor in Canada a journey he began at
the early age of 13.
In 1970, Rio de Janeiro, Marcus was brought
to master Carlson Gracie by his uncle.
It was love at first sight. I found the right
instructor, in the right place, at the right
time, he recalled.
In only seven years he had already achieved
the so desired black-belt but had to stop
competing in 1981 due to a knee injury. While
Soares attended Gama Filho University, he also
practiced judo and represented his university
at various judo tournaments; this resulted in a
full scholarship, assisting him in completing

his bachelor degree in Physical Education.

Because mixed martial arts competitions
were illegal in Brazil at the time, Soares never
competed in MMA tournaments.
Soares said he always knew he wanted
a career in sports; even before he had to
quit fighting, due to an injury, he taught at
Carlson Gracies gym. In 1979, he opened
his own gym in Copacabana and, in 1991,
returned to Carlson Gracie. Seven years
later, two days after his mothers death, he
was flying to Canada to teach the Brazilian
martial arts that he calls chess of the
human body. Currently 14 Canadian and
2 South-African gyms are part of Soares
methodology, the Carlson Gracie Team
Canada and follow his teaching methods and
curriculum of jiu-jitsu techniques established
by master Carlson Gracie.

na Universidade Gama Filho, ele
tambm treinou e competiu em Jud,
representando a Universidade nos
campeonatos, o que lhe rendeu uma
bolsa de estudos para concluir, tambm,
o curso de educao fsica. Mas
Marcus nunca chegou a participar de
competies de vale tudo, que naquela

poca era proibido no Brasil.

Ele conta que sempre quis trabalhar
com esporte e mesmo antes de parar de
lutar, por conta de uma leso, ele j era
instrutor na academia de Carlson Gracie.
Em 1979 ele abriu a prpria academia
em Copacabana e, em 1991, voltou
academia Carlson Gracie. Sete anos
mais tarde, dois dias aps a morte da
sua me, ele embarcava para o Canad
para ensinar por aqui a arte marcial
brasileira, que ele chama de xadrez
do corpo . Atualmente 14 academias
canadenses e duas sul-africanas so
afiliadas metodologia de Marcus,
a Carlson Gracie Team Canada, e
seguem a metodologia de ensino e
um currculo das tcnicas bsicas do
jiu-jtsu estabelecidas pelo mestre

Cresci numa cidadezinha do interior com cerca de 20 mil

habitantes e com 18 anos me mudei para uma cidade maior
quando fui para a universidade estudar jornalismo. Ainda
no satisfeita, me mudei para Curitiba e l foi quando

e Japons. Percebi o quanto era ignorante em relao a muita coisa - culturas, idiomas
e at mesmo no ingls.
Nessa poca tambm, passei a escrever para o blog do CCEL em portugus, j que antes
de vir para c criei um blog sobre Vancouver para contar minhas experincias. Tambm fiz
trabalhos voluntrios e sempre procurei me engajar o mximo possvel. Depois que o perodo
de aulas acabou, passei a trabalhar como busser num restaurante africano, onde pude praticar
tudo aquilo que tinha aprendido durante os quatro meses de estudo intensivo. Depois evolu,
passei a ser hostess num restaurante no badalado bairro de Yaletown onde estou at hoje.
Fiquei to engajada com Vancouver e me sentindo to em casa que a idia de j voltar para o Brasil me deixava desolada. Foi a que procurei
novamente o Canadian College para saber mais sobre os cursos profissionalizantes pois conheci alguns brasileiros que estudavam l e falavam
super bem. Fiquei muito empolgada com o programa Co-op em International Business e vi ali uma grande oportunidade de continuar morando
aqui, aprendendo ingls mas ao mesmo tempo ganhando conhecimento em uma rea super crescente no mercado. Tudo passou de apenas um
plano para uma realidade e decidi, junto aos meus pais que
sempre me apoiaram, fazer o curso de International Trade
Co-op no Canadian College.
A possibilidade de imigrar atravs do programa Canadian
Experience Class e pelo fato de poder trabalhar para
pagar meus estudos foram um dos pontos mais decisivos
na escolha do Canadian College. Com certeza isso fez
toda a diferena para mim tendo em vista a chance de
cada vez mais me tornar independente e evoluir como
profissional e tambm, claro, como pessoa. Mal posso

and vibrant multiculturalism,
Canada was the country chosen by
TV Record to be the shotting location for
a new Brazilian TV series. Rei Davi (King
David), is the latest series produced by TV
Record, one of the largest TV networks in
Brazil and it is scheduled to air in January
2012. The production team chose the cities
of Cache Creek and Kamloops, British
Columbia, to shoot some scenes for this
major production.
We chose these cities because
they met the geographical needs of our
production. Cache Creek and Kamloops are
areas where you can find desert terrain,
large rock formations and arid vegetation,
a perfect setting to show King Davids life,
said Edson Spinello, the series director.
This new TV series will tell the story of
David, a simple shepherd who was chosen
by God to become the king of Israel. The
production team shot all the scenes in
seven days in late September and was
overcome by the hospitality they received.
Actor Leandro Leo, who plays the young
David in the series, was fascinated by the
cities where he went, and spoke about
his favourite place during his brief, but
unforgettable trip to British Columbia.
I loved Kelowna. I had the opportunity
to visit a winery, an interesting and new
experience in my life. On the way there, we
passed along the city shore and we saw
beautiful beaches, said Leo. It was a great
and enriching experience, in my personal
life and in my professional life, he added.
After a week of shooting in Cache
Creek and Kamloops, the actor had the
opportunity to visit Vancouver and go
on a relaxing walking tour. He took some
pictures in Gastown and got to know other
touristic attractions in the city.
Despite having enjoyed the day in
Vancouver, Leo admitted that he would have
liked to have spent more days in the city.
I regret not having been here for
the film festival that was happening in
Vancouver or the various shows and
interesting concerts that were happening in
town, he said.
In addition to Leo and Spinello, the
production also featured seasoned actor
Leonardo Brcio, who played the adult
David in the series.
The main differences between
shooting in Brazil and in Canada were
the language and the difference in the
way the work was performed. It was
great to have worked with a Canadian
production company because everyone
was extremely hospitable and kind,
said Spinello.

pas escolhido pela Rede Record para
ser palco de mais uma de suas minissries.
Rei Davi vai ao ar em janeiro de 2012 e a
equipe de uma das maiores emissoras de
televiso do Brasil esteve em Cache Creek
e Kamloops, na Provncia da Colmbia
Britnica, para gravar algumas das cenas da
nova superproduo da Record.
Escolhemos essas cidades porque
atendem s necessidades geogrficas
da gravao das cenas. Cache Creek e
Kamloops so locais que tm terreno
desrtico, grandes formaes rochosas e
vegetao rida, um clima perfeito para
mostrarmos a vida do Rei Davi, explica o
Diretor Geral da minissrie, Edson Spinello.
A nova minissrie da Record vai contar
a histria de Davi, um simples pastor de
ovelhas que foi escolhido por Deus para
se tornar o rei de Israel. A equipe da
emissora brasileira esteve no Canad no
fim de setembro por apenas sete dias, o
suficiente para se apaixonar pelo pas e
pela hospitalidade de seu povo.
O ator Leandro Leo, que viver Davi
jovem na minissrie, se encantou pelas
cidades por onde passou e j elegeu
seu local favorito em sua rpida, mas
inesquecvel estadia pelo Canad.
Gostei muito de Kelowna, onde tive a
oportunidade de visitar uma vincola, uma
experincia nova e muito interessante.
No caminho at l, passamos pela orla
da cidade e conhecemos lindas praias,
diz Leandro. Foi uma experincia muito
enriquecedora, como pessoa e como
profissional, completa.
Depois de cerca de uma semana de
gravaes em Cache Creek e Kamloops,
o ator teve a oportunidade de visitar
Vancouver para passear e descansar,
aproveitando para tirar algumas fotos
em Gastown e conhecer outros pontos
tursticos da cidade.
Apesar de ter aproveitado muito o dia
em que esteve em Vancouver, Leandro
confessa que gostaria de ter ficado ainda
mais tempo na cidade.
S lamento no ter ficado para o
festival de cinema que estava rolando
em Vancouver, alm de vrios shows e
espetculos interessantes que estavam em
cartaz, diz o ator.
Alm de Leandro e Edson, a equipe
de produo da Record contou com a
presena do experiente Leonardo Brcio,
que interpretar Davi adulto na minissrie
que ter 29 captulos. Mas para que essa
superproduo ficasse perfeita, a Means
of Production, uma produtora canadense,
ajudou nas gravaes.

As principais diferenas entre gravar

no Brasil e no Canad foram a lngua e a
adaptao entre a maneira de trabalhar
deles e a nossa. Mas foi muito agradvel
trabalhar no Canad com essa produtora,
porque as pessoas foram extremamente
hospitaleiras e generosas, diz Edson.
Por outro lado, Leandro precisou
enfrentar um pequeno problema durante as
filmagens: o frio.
Sa do Rio de Janeiro para gravar em
cidades extremamente frias. Teve dias em
que acordei com a boca seca e cortada,
mas nada que atrapalhasse o meu prazer
de atuar. Mas, honestamente, com uma boa
equipe de trabalho e um bom texto decorado,
topo gravar em qualquer lugar do mundo.
Amo o que fao, diz Leandro.
Alm de Cache Creek e Kamloops, a
direo da minissrie filmou em Diamantina,
Minas Gerais, onde gravaram durante 30 dias,
e Rio de Janeiro, alm da cidade cenogrfica
dentro das instalaes do Recnov, um
complexo de estdios e novelas tambm
localizado na Cidade Maravilhosa.

For Leo, shooting in Canada was not

all about wineries and nice beaches. The
actor had to adapt to the Canadian cold
weather during the shoot.
I left Rio de Janeiro to shoot in cities
that are extremely cold. Some days I woke
up with lip blisters because of the dry and
cold weather, but nothing got in the way of
my passion for acting. To be honest, if I have
a great team and a good script, Im game
to shoot anywhere in the world. I love what I
do, said Leo.
In addition to Cache Creek and Kamloops,
shooting also took place in Diamantina, Minas
Gerais, were the crew stayed for 30 days.
Other scenes were shot at Recnov, Records
backlot in Rio de Janeiro.

Whenever

we think
of Bossa
Nova, it is inevitable to think of Rio de
Janeiro andits stunning nature and gorgeous
beaches. But here in Canada, when we
talk about this authentic Brazilian rhythm,
one of the names that come to mind is
Fernanda Cunha. The carioca singer is
already very famous in Vancouver and
every time she comes to this country she
amazes the Bossa Nova addicts who live in
the area.
This time the concert was held at
Performance Works on Granville Island,
which brought together Brazilians and
Canadians who love the carioca singer. This
passion is mutual and Fernanda doesnt
hide her unquestionable love for the
country.
I dont know how to explain it, but
Canadians have been very receptive to me
since the first time I came to Vancouver, in
2005. When I step on the sidewalk at the
Vancouver airport I feel like the happiest
woman in the world, said Cunha.
To reciprocate Canadas love for her,
Cunha decided to perform a musical
tribute. In 2009 she released a CD called
Brazil Canada, which brings together
Brazilian and Canadian songs.
I always learn a lot from Canadian
and Brazilian musicians. The Canadians
are very open to new ideas and new
concepts, adds the carioca, a fan of
Diana Krall and Nana Caymmi.
A few minutes into her thrilling
performance, Cunha did an interpretation
of Tom Jobins Corcovado. She wrapped
up the concert with Joo Gilbertos song
Adeus Amrica. The audience was ecstatic
about the carioca singer.
I feel very good when I listen to
Fernanda because it is one way to
remember my country, said Brazilian
Vania Cristina Ramos, who danced
samba in the last minutes of the show
on Granville Island. Canadian George
Richards agreed with Ramos.
She has such a love for what she
does and for her musicians. It definitely
comes out in her music. Her voice is
really beautiful, he said.
Cunha leaves Vancouver to continue
her international tour, but she will miss the
wonders of this Canadian City.
I like every place in Vancouver because
anyone who comes here feels a little
Canadian and feels a bit at home because of
the receptiveness of the people, she added.

sinto a mulher mais feliz do mundo, afirma
a cantora.
E para retribuir esse carinho que o povo
canadense sempre teve com a cantora,
Fernanda decidiu fazer uma espcie de
homenagem, gravando em 2009 um CD
chamado Brasil Canad, que rene msicas
brasileiras e canadenses.
Aprendo sempre muitas coisas com os
msicos canadenses e tambm com os
brasileiros. Os canadenses so muito abertos
a novas idias e a novos conceitos, diz
Fernanda, f da canadense Diana Krall e da
brasileira Nana Caymmi.
Minutos depois de se emocionarem
ouvindo Fernanda cantar Corcovado, de Tom
Jobim, e Adeus Amrica, de Joo Gilberto,
msica que encerrou mais um show em
Vancouver, a platia ainda estava fascinada
com a magia da carioca.

Brazil is in fashion. Just like in teen

movies from the 80s, our country is
like that girl whose true beauty is
only revealed when she takes off
her outdated glasses for the prom.
Brazil wore corruption like a fannypack for years a hideous thing,
despised by many, yet continued
to be worn as if it was a crucial
accessory to the decades stylistic package. But as trends
from the yuppies era are
en vogue again, the current
government is making an
honest effort to do away
with such tacky elements. If
the outfit doesnt suit you,
try another one on.
Since Dilma Rousseff
took office, there have been
six ministers replaced due
to irregularities and
another one is on her
radar. This fashion
trend of integrity only
ignites if the mass
supports it and there
is no greater fashion
faux pas than to keep
voting for fanny-packs
like Jos Sarney, Fernando Collor, and Paulo
Maluf, among other
dusty symbols of an era
where corruption strutted on the catwalk with
a cocky attitude, staring
you straight in the eye.
Foreigners may
already think we are in
fashion, like a pair of customized Havaianas sandals,
but we urgently need, more
than anything else, a major
makeover in our wardrobe; Brazil cant become a naked king,
or even worse, a king with only a
fanny-pack hanging from the hips.

O governo atual faz at
um esforo para no
se mostrar cafona. O vestido
no agradou, troca-se.
Na gesto Dilma, j so

por suspeitas de irregularidades,
e com mais um
na ala de mira da presidenta.
Mas a moda s pega
se a massa embarcar
tambm, e nada mais
dmod que continuar
votando em pochetes como

We can all imagine the challenges of leaving

your home country and moving abroad. To
look for a job, to make new friends, to perfect
a new language and in many instances
deal with extremely different climates. The
challenges in the process of moving forward
in a new environment, new culture and new
language are inevitable. On top of all that,
being away from family and friends can be
hard on the heart.
As a means of helping those who are
starting a new life in Vancouver, Colombian
public relations specialist, Paola Murillo,
founded Latincouver, the biggest Latin
community in the city.
The idea was to create a La Plaza
(Spanish for public square) to help
newcomers not feel like a fish out of water. In
many Latin American cities, the square is a
meeting place where everything happens
people socialize, chat, have a coffee, meet
people, do business so the website www.

latincouver.ca has the role to integrate people.

On the web, its members can offer and
find job positions, make friends, plan fun
activities, find the hottest restaurants or
the best language schools, or even buy
and sell items on the classified pages. In
that way, the website offers a great variety
of activities, such as business, social and
cultural meetings.
Izabela S moved from Brazil to Vancouver
over a year ago and has been an active
volunteer at Latincouver for two months but
regrets not joining the community earlier,
I barely knew anyone here, didnt
have many friends. After I learned about
Latincouver everything changed. I met
so many people, I improved my English
Too bad I didnt learn about the website
earlier.
Alice Lara, also from Brazil, has been in
Vancouver for 18 months has benefitted
from the Latincouver community.

I was desperately looking for work in my

field and couldnt find anything. Then when I
was surfing on the internet I stumbled upon
a volunteer position as a graphic designer at
Latincouver. It was perfect! I love the work
and the people, said Lara.
The goal of the community goes
beyond that of just helping newcomers in
Vancouver; the website is always trying to
engage Latinos and enthusiasts alike to
celebrate the importance of Latin culture,
which is constantly growing here. It also
works as a bridge between Latinos and
other groups from different backgrounds
that live within Vancouvers multicultural
landscape. Murillo explains.
We bring contributions in art, music,
gastronomy and business. We want to share it
not only amongst ourselves but also with the
residents of Vancouver who are from other
countries. Through Latincouver we can show
people what this country has to offer.

Buscar trabalho, fazer novos amigos, dominar

prosperar em um novo ambiente, uma nova

Sem falar na saudade de casa, da famlia e

Pensando em ajudar aqueles que esto
comeando uma nova vida em Vancouver, a
Relaes Pblicas colombiana Paola Murillo
criou a Latincouver, a maior comunidade latinoamericana da cidade.
A ideia foi criar uma praa pblica para
que os recm-chegados no se sentissem peixes fora dgua. Em muitas cidades da Amrica
Latina, a praa um ponto de encontro onde
tudo acontece: pessoas socializam, batem papo,
tomam um caf, conhecem gente, fazem negcios. Ento o site www.latincouver.ca tem esse
papel de integrar as pessoas, diz Paola.
Virtualmente, os membros podem oferecer
ou procurar emprego, fazer amizades, combinar
programas, descobrir restaurantes ou cursos de
idiomas e, at mesmo, comprar ou vender algo
atravs de classificados. Assim, o site propicia
uma srie de atividades, incluindo eventos de
negcios e programas sociais e culturais.
A brasileira Izabela S, em Vancouver h um
ano, voluntria da Latincouver h dois meses
e lamenta no ter descoberto a comunidade h
mais tempo.
Eu no conhecia quase ningum aqui, no
tinha muitos amigos. Depois que eu descobri a
Latincouver tudo mudou. Conheci um monte de
gente, meu ingls melhorou... Pena que eu no
encontrei o site antes, diz Izabela.
Alice Lara, tambm brasileira e h um
ano e meio na cidade, tambm se beneficiou com o movimento:
Estava desesperada procurando emprego
na minha rea e no conseguia. A olhando na
internet achei uma oportunidade para voluntariar como designer grfica na Latincouver. Caiu
como uma luva! Adoro o trabalho e as pessoas
No entanto, o objetivo da comunidade vai
alm de ajudar os que esto comeando em
Vancouver. O site busca unir latinoamericanos e
entusiastas para fortalecer e celebrar a riqueza
dessas culturas, cada vez mais crescentes por
aqui. Alm disso, funciona como uma ponte

O que o Consulado Brasileiro de Vancouver?

O Consulado-Geral do Brasil em Vancouver uma Repartio Pblica do Governo Brasileiro,
subordinada ao Ministrio das Relaes Exteriores.
Sua finalidade principal de prestar orientao, auxlio e informaes aos cidados
brasileiros, dentro dos limites estabelecidos pela legislao brasileira, pela legislao canadense pertinente e pelos tratados internacionais firmados pelo Brasil.

O Consulado-Geral do Brasil exerce as seguintes funes:

Proteger os interesses dos cidados brasileiros em sua jurisdio, desde que estejam
de acordo com a legislao brasileira e com as leis locais;
Prestar assistncia a cidados desvalidos;
Exercer as funes de Notrio Pblico e de oficial de Registro Civil, e, como tal,
emitir certides de nascimento, casamento, bito, procuraes, declaraes, etc.
Expedir documentos de viagem (passaportes, etc.);
Atuar como rgo alistador militar.
Proceder ao alistamento eleitoral e conduzir os processos eleitorais para presidente
da repblica em sua jurisdio;
Prestar informaes relativas legislao aduaneira e afins;
Emitir cdula de identificao consular;
Autenticar documentos para que produzam efeitos no Brasil;
Expedir certificados e atestados previstos na legislao brasileira;
Conceder, de acordo com a legislao brasileira, vistos de entrada para que cidados
estrangeiros possam ingressar em territrio nacional.

he Consulate General represents the

Brazilian Government in matters
dealing with the local authorities and the
Brazilian community in the area under
its jurisdiction. Its objective is to offer the
best possible assistance to protect and defend the interests and rights of Brazilian
citizens, in accordance with Brazilian and
Canadian laws.
The main functions of the Consulate
General are as follows:
To grant passports to Brazilian citizens
and entry visas to foreigners wishing to
go to Brazil;
To act as notary and civil registry, issuing documents such as legal wills;
powers of attorney; birth, marriage and
death registrations; Brazilian military
registration; as well as legalization of
foreign documents to be used in Brazil
