Psychoanalytic Theory: Carl Jung

Jung was a colleague of Freud

He was obsessed with the unconscious mind

But, Jung viewed the unconscious mind differently than Freud

Jung saw personality development as lifelong process of striving to reconcile

opposite urges

Levels of the Psyche

Conscious: those that are sensed by the ego

Personal Unconscious: embraces all repressed, forgotten, or subliminally

perceived experiences of the individual

Collective Unconscious: collections of memories, knowledge, and experiences

which are inherited and pass on from one generation to another.

Introvert and Extrovert

Jung is most famous for his development of the personality types of INTROVERT
and EXTROVERT. Introverts are people who prefer their internal world of
thoughts, feelings, and dreams. Extroverts prefer the external world of things,
other people, and activities.

1. PERSONA

Side of personality that people show to the world

IF WE IDENTIFY TOO CLOSELY WITH OUR PERSONA, WE REMAIN

UNCOUNSCIOUS OF OUR INDIVIDUALITY AND ARE BLOCKED FROM ATTAINING
SELF-REALIZATION

2. SHADOW

The archetype of darkness and repression

Represents the things we do not wish to acknowledge but attempt to hide from
ourselves and others.

People who NEVER realize their shadows may, nevertheless, come under its power and
lead tragic lives, constantly running BAD LUCK and reaping harvest of defeat and
discouragement for others.

3. ANIMA

Jung believed that all humans are bisexual

The FEMININE SIDE of men.

Represents irrational moods and feelings

Source of much misunderstanding in male-female relationships, but it may also be

responsible for the alluring mystique woman has in the psyche of men (Hayman, 2001;
Hillman, 198)

4. ANIMUS

The MASCULINE archetype in men.

Responsible for thinking and opinion in women.

5. GREAT MOTHER

Associated with both positive and negative feelings

FERTILITY & NOURISHMENT: capable of producing and sustaining life

POWER & DESTRUCTION: devour or neglect her offspring

6. WISE OLD MAN

Wisdom and meaning

Powerful person, who fights against great odds to conquer or vanquish evil

Demonstrated by our fascination with the heroes
