Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
InTASC Standard:
Standard #6: The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of
assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner
progress, and to guide the teachers and learners decision making (InTASC,
2013).

CEC Standard: Standard #3 Research & Inquiry

Research and inquiry inform the decisions of special educators who have
completed advanced programs in guiding professional practice. Special
educators know models, theories, philosophies, and research methods that
form the basis for evidence-based practices in special education. This
knowledge includes information sources, data collection, and data analysis
strategies. Special educators evaluate the appropriateness of research
methodologies in relation to practices presented in the literature. They use
educational research to improve instructional techniques, intervention
strategies, and curricular materials. They foster an environment supportive
of continuous instructional improvement, and engage in the design and
implementation of action research. Special educators are able to use the
literature to resolve issues of professional practice, and help others to
understand various evidence-based practices.

Brief Description of Evidence:

As part of my SPED230, Informal and Formal Assessments for Mild Disabilities
class I took in the summer of 2016, I was able to gain knowledge of the
certain tests and assessments schools use with children who have learning
disabilities. The purpose of this course was to help me understand what
assessments to use in appropriate cases and be able to recognize the names
of these assessments for future use.
For my artifact for SPED230 I am using a Prezi to put all of my information
and research I have collected throughout this course. By using Prezi for my
artifact I am able to put the information into an order that makes most sense
and is easy to follow. For this particular class I have many different things to
incorporate on my artifact which includes; the purpose of informal and formal

assessments, the names and functions of standardized tests, and building a

collaboration plan that benefits the parents, teachers, and school.

Analysis of What I Learned:

One of the most important things I have learned in SPED230 is the various
classifications associated with Article 7. Since I am majoring in Special
Education, I think it is vital for me to know and be familiar with Article 7
because it contains information on eligibility requirements and obtains laws
that must be followed with a child with differing abilities.
When I first started this class I had a small amount of knowledge on informal
and formal assessments and standardized testing. What has helped me
understand more was creating a Prezi presentation about what assessments
are, a Flip Quiz on the certain types of assessments used in schools, and a
Flow Chart that explained the assessments and how to use them.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the

InTASC Standard:
My competence for SPED230 was able to provide me with the skills I need in
order to make good decisions as an aspiring teacher and how to collaborate
with families. Collaborating with families helps them to feel more at ease
that their child is getting the appropriate education and taking the necessary
tests and assessments to benefit them further in their education. What I
have learned will demonstrate that I have understood the process of RTI and
point out the steps that you need when it is not successful. SPED230 has
shown me a variety of processes that I need to know when it comes to
interpreting and administering.
