IELTS LISTENING TEST

The IELTS Listening test will take about 30 minutes, and you
will have an extra 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the
answer sheet. The Listening test is the same for both IELTS
Academic and IELTS General Training modules.
You will listen to four recorded texts, monologues and
conversations by a range of native speakers, and write their
answers to a series of questions.
These include questions which test the ability to understand
main ideas and detailed factual information, ability to
understand the opinions and attitudes of speakers, ability to
understand the purpose of what is said and ability to follow
the development of ideas.

LISTENING TEST SECTIONS

Section 1: A conversation between two people set in an everyday
social context, e.g. a conversation in an accommodation agency.
Section 2: A monologue set in an everyday social context, e.g. a
speech about local facilities.
Section 3: A conversation between up to four people set in
an educational or training context, e.g. a university tutor and
a student discussing an assignment.
Section 4: A monologue on an academic subject, e.g. a university
lecture.

LISTENING TIPS AND TRICKS

1. Take advantage of dull time and scan the questions.
2. UNDERLINE long words and phrases found on the questionnaire
using a pencil. Write synonyms if the words are familiar.
3. UNDERLINE Keywords and hint words found on the questionnaire
using a pencil. Write synonyms if the words are familiar.
4. Write your answers on the questionnaire. You will be given time
to transfer to the answer sheet.
5. For map/direction related questions, use the NEWS and LRTB
Strategy.
6. FOCUS. FOCUS. FOCUS.
7. If you miss a number, leave it and move to the next item.

8. Be aware of negative qualifiers and double negatives.
9. For Multiple Choice questions, eliminate impossible answers. If you
are unsure, follow your first choice. If you are clueless, always
choose C if it is available. GUESS if all fails.
10. Check your spelling for questions that require a word or phrase. If
unsure, write a synonym for the word instead. Wrong spelling is
wrong, unfortunately.
11. Take advantage of the first 25 questions as they are easy to follow.
You are guaranteed a Band Score of 6 if you get all 25. The last
15 are the hard ones.
12. Practice. I will provide you with materials to use at home. Try also
free online tests using the techniques above.

IELTS READING TEST

The IELTS Reading test will take about 60 minutes. It consists
of 40 questions.
A variety of question types is used in order to test a wide
range of reading skills.
These include reading for gist, reading for main ideas, reading
for detail, skimming, recognizing writers opinions, attitudes
and purpose, and understanding logical argument.
The reading test for Academic and General Training are
different in terms of difficulty and BAND scoring.

1. The IELTS Academic Reading test includes three long texts which

range from the descriptive and factual to the discursive and

analytical. The texts are authentic and are taken from books,
journals, magazines and newspapers. These have been selected for
a non-specialist audience but are recognizably appropriate for
anyone entering undergraduate or postgraduate courses or seeking
professional registration.
The IELTS General Training Reading test includes three passages
with tasks. It requires you to read extracts from books, magazines,
newspapers, notices, advertisements, company handbooks and
guidelines. These are materials you are likely to encounter on a daily
basis in an English speaking environment.

READING TIPS AND TRICKS

1. Spend the first five (5) minutes UNDERLINING ALL the long words
and significant phrases on the texts and questions.
2. Focus on the questions instead of the reading text.

3. COMPREHENSION vs. INTERPRETATION
4. For Fill in the Blanks or Give what is ask, compare the long words
and phrases in the question as against the text for synonyms. It
will be easier to answer by checking the underlined words.
5. For TRUE, FALSE, NOT GIVEN True statements are in the text.
False statements contradict the text. Not Given are not in the
text.
