A survey of over 3,000 Americans found that about 75% may be dehydrated because most do not drink enough water and beverages like alcohol and caffeine deplete hydration. The director of the Cornell Nutrition Information Center noted that Americans are likely only getting a third of the hydration benefits they need and recommended putting water at the top of your beverage pyramid to improve hydration.

A survey of 3,003 Americans, conducted by Yankelovich Partners for the Nutrition
Information Center at The New York Hospital (Cornell Medical Center) concluded that about 75% of all Americans may be dehydrated. "The net result is that most Americans are probably only getting about a third of the valuable hydration benefits they need," says Barbara Levine, R.D.,Ph.D., Director of the Cornell Nutrition Information Center. "The vast majority are not drinking enough water to begin with, and, to make matters worse, many do not realize that beverages containing alcohol an caffeine actually rob the body of water."
