CEE 143 Design of Prestressed Concrete

University of California at Los Angeles

Spring 2015
Bondy
Homework #5 (Due May 14th)

Given:
Unfactored Service Loads w
DL = 1.65 klf (includes bm wt.)
LL = 0.40 klf
fc = 4,000 psi
fpu = 270 ksi
= 0.9
Parabolic tendon profiles
Tendons are UNBONDED

Ab(#8) = 0.79 in2

Ab(#7) = 0.60 in2
Astrand = 0.153 in2

Find:
(a) Calculate the demand moments at support B and at the locations of maximum
positive moment in the spans (check the positive moment demand at the location
where the factored shear diagram, Vu, is zero). (4 pts)
(b) Calculate the useable moment capacity, Mn at support B and at midspan of the
longer span and compare with the demand moments (you are not required to check
the positive moment capacity in the shorter span). Clearly state whether or not the
design satisfies the ACI 318 Code. Verify the section is tension controlled at both
locations. (4 pts)
(c) Determine if the minimum bonded rebar as required by the ACI 318 Code has been
provided at the support and in the spans. (2 pts)
Dimensions shown are to reinforcement centroids from face of concrete. You may
assume that all mild reinforcement has adequate development length. Utilize compression
steel at the support, unless it is determined not to be yielding. Strains within 5% of y
may be considered fully yielded for stress calculations.

b)
Capacity At Support, Mn = 1,166.4 ft-kips > 1,008.4 ft-kips, OK
Capacity in Span B-C, Mn = 1,187.0 ft-kips > 1,134.5 ft-kips, OK
c)
0.004Act at Support = 2.98 in2 < 3.16 in2 provided, OK
0.004Act in Spans = 1.63 in2 > 1.20 in2 provided, NG!
