Invention of insulin

The invention of insulin has helped people suffering from diabetes to live a normal life.
Insulin is a hormone made in the pancreas and it is responsible for regulating blood glucose levels. It
was discovered in the nineteenth century and the first medical success was with a boy with type 1
diabetes, who was almost dying, but he bounced back to life thanks to insulin treatment.
Why is insulin important? First of all, insulin regulates the sugar in your blood. After eating,
carbohydrates transform into glucose, which is the one that provides energy. For healthy people, the
pancreas responds by producing insulin, allowing glucose to enter the tissue. Secondly, insulin helps to
store glucose for energy. After you eat, the excess glucose is stored so that between meals, when
insulin levels are lower, the glucose is released so that blood sugar levels remain normal.
The most common illness related to insulin is diabetes, which happens when the body does not
secrete enough insulin or it no longer uses the insulin effectively. An important statement related to the
importance of insulin comes from the director of Diabetes UK Cymru, who said that thanks to this
amazing discovery, 59.400 people in Wales were now able to live healthy lives.
Although insulin does not cure diabetes, we can conclude that it is still one of the biggest
discoveries in medicine and it helps people with this illness to keep their bodies under control.
