CONCLUSION OF THE YEAR OF MERCY (YOM)

On November 20, the Solemnity of Christ the King, the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy comes to an end. As
ritually prescribed, our Holy Door and all other holy doors of the world except the one at St. Peters Basilica in the
Vatican, will be ritually closed on Sunday November 13. Our Holy Door will be closed after the Noon Mass.
These closings are only a reminder of how open the doors of mercy in our hearts must remain so as to imitate
more faithfully the example of Our Lord Jesus Christ and all the saints. For those who have not done so yet, there
is still time to pass through the Holy Door and humbly implore the blessing of forgiveness, peace and a new
beginning from Jesus Christ who is the way, the truth and the life. Literally hundreds of people have passed
through our Holy Door and signed our book in a humble gesture of hope and promise at the same time.

Here at SJN during this year, we have joyfully celebrated the mercy of God through many spiritual and charitable
activities, especially through the celebration of 3 communal Penance Services and all the Parish Monthly Outreach
(PMO) efforts. We have seen and touched the face of Mercy, Jesus himself. What a blessing!
To mark the end of the YOM in a spirit of gratitude and fellowship we are having a mini-retreat on Saturday,
November 19 at the Education Building, 8:45 am till Noon, with a Pot Luck lunch. The parish will provide the
meat. Please RSVP no later than November 16.
A DIFFERENT FACE OF WAR
As announced in last weekend's bulletin, I have asked Jim Van Straten, a SJN parishioner, to present a talk on his
recently published book "A Different Face of War" on Thursday evening, November 17 th at 6:30 p.m. in the Scott
Room of the Family Center. I have personally read the book and can tell you that it presents a compelling and
fascinating look at a little known aspect of the Vietnam War. If you have any interest in American history, or want
to know more about our military's humanitarian efforts during that divisive and tragic war, you'll appreciate this
special presentation. I have asked Jim to have books available for sale at the event. The purchase price will be
$25.00 per book which is about $10.00 less than the publisher's asking price. The event will be open to the public
so you may invite non-parishioners if you wish.
FAREWELL RECEPTION
It is with mixed feelings that we have to say good bye to Melroy and Valeria Brandt. They have come to a point in
their lives where family members are asking them to move closer to them in Weimar, TX. While we see the
goodness of this decision we refuse to see them go as they have been a strong pillar of our community for so many
years. In their honor, a punch and cake reception is slated for Saturday, November 19 after the 6:00 pm Mass in
the Education Building. All are welcome. Our best wishes and blessings to Melroy and Valeria as they begin this
new chapter in their lives.
