HAMON VAP & RMP Cooling Towers ip) ~~ u = er (e) a [s) = = [e) [o) oO lal: 2 WHY A COOLING TOWER ? Water is the most universally used fluid to evacuate heat generated in machines and production processes. But the warm water must be disposed off. This can be done in different ways: it can be drained into river of a sewer. This is very expensive dus to the cost of fresh water, the sewage cast and the cost of the water treatment neces- sary to bring the water quality within the limits for sewage water. (One could try to recuperate heat from the water through heat exchangers, but this is usually not an economically feasible installation due to generally low temperature differences. Recycling of the water, after cooling process, is certainly the mostefficient Way to treat cooling water. The equipment used therefore is the COOLING TOWER OPERATING PRINCIPLE The cooling tower is a’water to air” heat exchanger in which the water to be cooled is in direct contact with the air. The air, as it travelling through the cooling tower, is heated and saturated with water, The main part of the cooling process in cooling tower is achieved through evaporation The efficiency of the evaporation process is directly linked to the concept of the heal exchange surface, also called the fill pack. The hot water is evenly distributed in the cooling tower above the fill pack, The pump head required at the water inlet is very low. In the fill pack the water is thoroughly mixed with the air, Fresh air is continuously drawn into the bottom of the tower. The air moves in counterflow with the water through the tower and is. ejected into the atmosphere at high speed. The amount of water evapo- rated is approximately 1 to 3 % of the circulating waterfiow, depending on the operating conditions. Each liter of water evaporated eliminates 2500 KJ ies to become your ntribute to a cleaner industrial enviroment for the 21st century ” a HAMON, HAMON COOLING TOWERS -VAP TYPE The combination of water which is fully saturated with oxygen an in which dissolved salts are con- centrated, together with warm and moist air, make the operating conditions in the cooling tower aggressive and even corrosive. Hamon, the world leader in evaporative cooling technology, has develop an FRP cooling tower range that can handle this harsh conditions. The VAP cooling tower presents the following unique customer benefits : - Extremely long lifetime - Minimal investment. - Solid and simple design. - Minimal running and maintain costs. - Guaranteed thermal performance. DESCRIPTION The VAP is an induced draft counterfiow cooling tower offering remarkable thermal performanca. The overall use of plastic materials gives to these cooling towers an excep- tional resistance to corrosion and reduces significantly all maintenance cost. The low specific weight of FRP also allow to use simple supporting structures and make hoisting maneuvers less difficult. VAP cooling towers can be very well integrated inte the ‘overall architectural lines and buildings, independent of ‘whether they are installed on the roof or at ground level. “We offer you complete and optimal solution for a long-term economical operation while preserving your water source. ” VAP TYPE The VAP tower consist mainly of the following components : 41. Casing The casing is formed by FRP self-supporting panels. The normal colour is white or sey, but other colour is available on request. Between the panels, a polyethylene seal and stainless steel bolts and nuts form a watertight joint, heat exchange surface. The patented specific form of these sheets is designed by HAMON to combine high thermal performance with a low air side pressure drop, and avoid premature fill pack clogging by providing a wide passage for solids in suspenstan, 3. The Water Distribution ‘Good water distribution is essential fer the optimal operation of the cooling tower. Water distribution made of PVE pipe, non-clogging spray nozzles, made of polypropyl ene and polyamide, distribute the water evenly over the surface area. Only a small head (+/- 8 kPa) is required at the cooling tower inlet flange: 2. The Fill Pack (a) PVC thermoformed sheets are assembled in solid un-deformable blocks which form the 4, The Drift Eliminators In order to eliminate water loss by drift, the cooling tower is equipped with drift elimina- tors. These consist of PVC extruded sheets, assembled with polypropylene spacer to form light-weight and easily handle sections. The standard eliminators reduce water loss by drift to lass than 0.1 % of the circulating waterflow. 5. The Fan - Motor Assembly ‘The fan-motor assembly is installed on a het dip galvanized steel frame on top of the cooling tower. An aluminium alloy axial fan with variable pitch at stand-stil, is directly coupled to a squirrel cage low speed ( 600 to 1000 rpm ) motor. The motor is TEFC IP 55 ndard with class F insulation. The direct coupling forms a maintenance-free transmission in, Only the model VAP 303 and VAP 323 requires site assembly of . The basin has all necessary connections such as the water to avoid water loss through the air inlet section of the VAP. led on concrete site-constructed basin. in that case, ian to design and construct this basin. yy saving amperature fill pack for water inlet lemperatures up to 700C. 5 a HAMON, VAP TYPE Make up water (On recirculation circuits, the Susp solids. content increases due to the eva oration of pure water in the cooling tower. Aregular drain, or blow-down, is needed to keep the total suspended solids con- centration in the water within acceptable values, hence avoiding logging, ‘Make-up water required is equal to the some of evaporated water plus blow down and drift lost. ‘Concentration factor depends from make-up water quality and the water treatment of the circuit. Ask HAMON for more details. Delivery ‘VAP cooling towers are delivered fully assembled with lbasin, ready for installation. For models 303 and 323, the FRP basin must be assembled on site. The cooling tower ‘can be delivered in bulk for site assembly, detailed ‘assembly instructions are supplied with the unit. Installation VAP cooling towers can be installed on concrete slab or ‘on steel structure. The low weight of the VAP allows a light supporting structure. In case of bulk supply, the customer can easily assemble the WAP by bolting all elements together. Hydraulic and electrical connections Alter erection of the cooling tower, all piping must be connected. Hot water inlet, cold water outlet, make up and overflow connecting piping must be supported sep arately from the cooling tower without inducing stresses to the cooling tower structure. The electrical connections must be executed according to national and local rules. Cold weather operation During cold weather, provisions will be made to avoid freezing in the fill pack or water basin, Partial or total by-pass of the cooling tower, two speed motors and electrical heaters are the most commonly used. In any is not recommend to allow outlet cold water temperatures to fall below 5°C. HAMON's cooling tower specialists will advise you when needed. HAMON COOLING TOWERS - RMP TYPE ‘The RMP type are the "PANELLED MODULAR" cooling towers of Hamon package cooling towers range. ‘The RMP cooling towers type cover the medium and high capacity range. They are suitable for the most of the industrial applications. ‘The preassembled designed are easily packed in the ISO sized containers, in order to reduce freight cost. ‘The RMP casing consist of 12 standardized factory fully preassembled steel framed panels. They are fitted together on site by bolting, and connected to strong central framework. ‘The RMP is an induced draft counterfiow type. The RMP cooling tower take advantage of the large experience of HAMON in thermal research and in the fields of thermoplastic flings. All frameworks are made of hot dipped galvanized steel, giving the RMP cooling towers a high resistance against corrosion. “The HAMON Group more than 100 years of experience in water cooling” RMP TYPE 1. Construction ‘The RMP casing basically includes modular steel framed panels delivered with integrated corrugated FRP cladding. FRP cladding can also being installed.on site” Only two kinds of panels are needed for the whole RMP range. Each panels includes the air inlet section and the wall section in one part. The panels are connected with strong steel beams to central framework. This framework is designed to support the main static and dynamic loads of the structure: and of the mechanical equipment 3. Mechanical Equipment On the top of unit, the mechanical equipment setis settled on central framework, which consist of : ~ One axial fan - One right angle gearbox, specially designed for cooling tower application. - One drive shaft - One electrical motor TEFC, IP 55, class F insulation 4, Access ‘An inspection door located on one side of the casing, allows inside access for maintenance. A cage ladder is provided from basin curb to the access door, in conformity with the safety regulations and standard. Stairways also available as option. 2. Infill and water distribution sytem ‘The RMP cooling towers are equipped with: - Ahot water distribution network, whose distribu- tion pipes are PVG made. These pipes are fitied with large orifice spray nozzles operating under low pressure (approx.0,4m WC). The water distr- bution is self draining by gravity. - The fill, which consists of modules of factory glued PVC sheets. The designed of this infill combines high thermal performance and low pressure drop far the highest efficiency. The cor- rugations are vertical to reduse fouling risk and motor absorbed power. When many cells have to be dispatched, the infil sheets can be delivered to be glued on site. This option reduces again the volume and the cost of the freight. ~Ahigh efficient PVG drift eliminator system to reduve drift losses 5.
