PREFACE
I\ N authorized edition of the Manual of Prayers
r\. was drawn up for popular use by order of
Cardinal Manning and the Bishops of the Province
of Westminster in I 886. It was felt that the great
variety of versions, which in the course of time
had crept into the prayers-contained in devotional
books, seriously hindered the congregational use
ofEnglish prayers. Accordingly a uniform version
was approved and adopted.
This work proved invaluable and has been of
the greatest use in the fostering of congregational
prayer in the vernacular, which was an immemorial
custom of our forefathers. But inevitably with
the passage of time certain of these prayers have
proved more popular than others. With changed
circumstances some have fallen into disuse, whilst
certain more recent devotions have achieved a
prominent place in the prayers of the people.
- For this reason it has been thought desirable to
revise the original edition of the Manual and to
collect in a single volume, for the convenience of
priests and their congregations, a limited number
of now familiar and popular devotions. This is not
a collection of new prayers; rather is it a new

From pestilence that walks to and fro in the darkness, from the death that wastes under the noon.
Though a thousand fall at thy side, ten thousand at
thy right hand, it shall never come next or near thee;
Rather, thy eyes shall look about thee, and see the
reward of sinners.
He, the Lord, is thy refuge; thou hast found a
stronghold in the most High.
There is no harm that can befall thee, no plague
that shall come near thy dwelling.
He has given charge to his angels concerning thee,
to watch over thee wheresoever thou goest;
They will hold thee up with their hands lest thou
shouldst chance to trip on a stone.
Thou shalt tread safely on asp and adder, crush
lion and serpent under thy feet.
He trusts in me, mine it is to rescue him; he
acknowledges my name, from me he shall have
protection;
When he calls upon me, I will listen; in affliction
I am at his side, to bring him safety and honour.
Length of days he shall have to content him, and
find in me deliverance.

OCCASIONAL PRAYERS
THE SEVEN PENITENTIAL PSALMS
Proper to be recited on Fasting Days and at other penitential times.
JORD, do not remember our sins, or those of
L our fathers, nor punish us for our misdeeds.
PSALM 6. DOMINE, NOLI ME
75
LESSED are they who have their faults forgiven, their transgressions buried deep.
Blessed is the man who is not guilty in the Lord's
reckoning, the heart that hides no treason.
While I kept my own secret, evermore I went
sighing, so wasted my frame away,
Bowed down day and night by thy chastisement;
still my strength ebbed, faint as in midsummer
heat.
At last I made my transgression known to thee,
and hid my sin no longer.
Fault of mine, said I, I here confess to the Lord;
and with that, thou didst remit the guilt of my sin.
Let every devout soul, then, turn to thee in prayer
when hard times befall;
Rise the floods never so high, they shall have no
power to reach it.

DEVOTIONS TO THE
BLESSED VIRGIN AND
THE SAINTS
THE ROSARY OF THE BLESSED
VIRGIN MARY
([ The fifteen mysteries are divided into thr~e parts,
viz. five JOYFUL, five SORROWFUL, and five
GLORIOUS mysteries. We should endeavour to arouse
corresponding affections in the will during the recital of
each Decade, such as the devotion of each one may
suggest; for example, in the first part, sentiments ofjoy
for the coming of our Redeemer; in the second, of compassion for the sufferings of our Lord, and contrition for
our sins, which were the occasion of them; in the third,
of thanksgiving for the exaltation and glory of our
Saviour and of his Blessed Mother, hoping, through the
merits of his Passion and by her intercession, to be made
partakers of their glory.

Hail Mary.
MERCIFUL God, let the glorious intercession of thy saints assist us ; above all, the
most blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of thy onlybegotten Son, and thy holy Apostles, Peter and
Paul, to whose patronage we humbly recommend
this our land. Be mindful of our fathers, Eleutherius, Celestine, and Gregory, bishops of the
holy City; of Augustine, Columba, and Aidan,
who delivered to us inviolate the faith of the holy
Roman Church. Remember our holy martyrs,
who shed their blood for Christ; especially our
first martyr, Saint Alban, and thy most glorious
bishop, Saint Thomas of Canterbury. Remember
all those holy confessors, bishops, and kings, all
those holy monks and hermits, all those holy
virgins and widows, who made this once an island
of saints, illustrious by their glorious merits and
virtues. Let not their memory perish from before
thee, 0 Lord, but let their supplication enter daily
into thy sight; and do thou, who didst so often
spare thy sinful people for the sake of Abraham,
Isaac, and Jacob, now, also, moved by the prayers
of our fathers reigning with thee, have mercy upon
us, save thy people, and bless thy inheritance; and
