Dear President,

The amount of gun related deaths in America is ten times more than Australia, Germany
and Portugal (per 100,000 people). Why is this happening? Isnt our government supposed to
keep our Safety and Happiness as its highest priority? How can we think were doing a good
job when people all across America are scared? Scared to go outside because they might get shot
due to their race, their religion, or even just because they were in the wrong place at the wrong
time. I guess its true that mankind is, more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, but
why dont we right ourselves by abolishing the forms to which we are accustomed? Everyone
has gone numb to the senseless deaths and forget that it can be stopped. We, as a nation, need to
revisit our interpretation of the second amendment to better improve our country and its peoples
safety, not from other countries but from ourselves.
In countries with stricter firearm regulations and less guns in circulation, such as
Australia, there are considerably less gun related deaths. You may think, Hey doesnt this go
against my second amendment? To that I say no. The second amendment states that in order to
maintain a well regulated militia the people have the right to keep and bear arms. But to
understand this amendment you must first understand that it was written at a time when there
was no formal army, and the threat of Britain invading was still very real. They had to come
together and fight for their country because no one else could. But now, we have a military, we
have police, we have our safety, so why do we still have our guns?
You may also argue that you need guns to defend yourself. But what is there to defend
against if no one else has a gun. Now Im not advocating for a fully gun free society, they have
their uses when in the hands of trained officers and citizens. What I want is for guns to only be
used by people who have undergone in depth background checks and follow gun laws to the tee.
The less armed civilians the better.
We need to fix our firearm regulations or else the unnecessary violence and killings wont
stop. Was it necessary for twenty children, ages six to seven, to be killed in their own school? We
need to stop this, by implementing more strict gun laws in the U.S. If not we will continue on the
path were on now, there will continue to be needless deaths all because people want their guns.
But if you want to stop losing over thirty thousand americans annually to guns then stop looking
at it as a statistic and see it for what it is, a tragedy. Dont let your fellow Americans die just
because of an outdated law that we cant seem to let go of.
Sincerely,
