EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This report represent the midship scantling of an 82000 deadweight bulk

carrier vessel design by Sekuntum Marine Sdn Bhd according to the Standard Naval
Architecture Procedure. The bulk carrier principal dimensions that have been

obtained during Ship Design I preliminary design are rule length,

consist of midship scantling and strength assessment for 82000 tonnes deadweight
bulk carrier carrying coal calculated based on formula provided according to the
Lloyds Register Rules and Regulations for the Classification of Ships including the
rule dimensions, material selection, framing system selection, framing spacing
calculations, section modulus and midship scantling drawing. All of the calculations
comparing three different value of the secondary spacing (s) which are 1000mm,
1500mm and 2000mm. the analysis done have shown that 1500mm secondary
spacing has the most optimum safety factor that is near to 2 which is 1.88cm
The summary of the results are as follows:
1. The midship scantling drawing are shown in the results
2. The scantling table are presented in the result.

INTRODUCTION

The midship scantling drawing are considered one the most important
structural drawing for a bulk carrier ship and it is always been referred to the future
structural design process. Therefore, there are a lot of aspects to be taken into
considerations in the designing process of the midship section especially in the terms
of the design and various functions.
In designing a bulk carrier, the thickness of the whole ship must be calculated
including the hull frame plating, inner hull and stiffener thickness. The spacing
between the stiffeners also need to be determine and included in the calculations.
This calculations is to determine the suitable thickness of every part of the ship for
this particular bulk carrier design based on the different of spacing determined. After
all the thickness of plate calculated, we are required to select the material that
required the calculations for the section modulus of the ship to withstand the stress of
the ship by the Safety Factor determined by the calculation of the designed bulk
carrier.
The calculations are done for the assurance for the bulk carrier to not fail
when being use as well as to ensure that our company does not suffered any loss.
Each part of the bulk carrier has different thickness that need to be calculated by
using different formula provided in Rules and Regulations for Classification of Ships
and other resources. There are some assumptions needed to be assume in the
calculations such as the secondary spacing (s) between the stiffeners in the bulk
carrier to start the calculation.
This report presents the design of midship section scantling for 82000 tonnes
deadweght for coal bulk carrier. This report present the assessment made for

determining the best and most suitable scantling for the midship sectionof the vessel
with refference of Lloyds Register as te classification society require ment for this
vessel safety operation.
