Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Cambridge IGCSE First Language Spanish (0502)

How important is it for candidates to get the word count of their work exactly right?
Examiners will read and consider everything written by the candidates, irrespective of the word count. All
material will be considered when marks are awarded. Candidates should not be excessively worried if they
are slightly over or under the suggested word count.
However, if an answer is significantly longer or shorter than the suggested word count, it will most likely be
self-penalising. Answers that are too short are very likely to be penalised for lack of content, whilst answers
that are too long will probably not be written with concision and precision, and so be penalised for style and
possibly for repetition.
We suggest that candidates should practise answering these types of questions before the exam, and take
note of how many pages they should write in order to answer within the word limits (this will be different for
each candidate, depending on their handwriting).
When summarising the contents of a text (Paper 2 Question 3), will candidates be penalised for
writing The text says that (El texto dice que)?
When candidates summarise a text, a few uses of the above phrase will not be penalised. However,
candidates should avoid repeating this same phrase too many times in their answer, and should focus on
the relevant content of the text.
I have a very strong foreign language speaker candidate. Can I enter him/her for a First Language
examination?
Yes you can. However you will need to bear in mind that the level of sophistication, accuracy and fluency
required in a First Language examination is that of a native speaker. The assessment objectives for Foreign
Language examinations are quite different, rewarding communication and giving opportunities for Listening
and Speaking. An alternative solution might be to enter your candidate for Advanced Subsidiary Spanish
Language.
What effect does the Speaking and Listening component have on the main grade? Are my
candidates at a disadvantage if they dont take it?
Speaking and Listening is optional, and is separately endorsed (on a scale of 1 (High) to 5 (Low)). In other
words, the main grade is not affected by it in any way.
When will I receive the materials for the 0502/5 Speaking and Listening test?
No question paper is required. Marking instructions and the Oral Examination Summary Form for conducting
and assessing the Speaking and Listening test must be printed as required. The Oral Examination Summary
Form can be downloaded from www.cie.org.uk/samples Centres must provide their own recording materials
on which to record the sample of candidates for moderation.
Who marks the Speaking tests?
It is the responsibility of the person conducting the Speaking tests to mark them. The tests should be marked
as they are being conducted. Further guidance on the arrangements, recording and marking of the speaking
tests can be found in the syllabus document.
