Mission Statement

The mission statement is sometimes underestimated into the organizations, but everyone
should remember that it is what tells the world who is the organization, it can be compared
to the introduction you make of yourself when you meet new people, without a mission
statement the employees, customers and suppliers would not have any idea of whom they
are dealing with, the mission statement is also a guide for all the staff inside the
organization, it is like a model of how to act and behave, but as we saw on the examples
many times the mission statement is developed only by the top management so it reflects
their beliefs and ideas, so it is probable that only managers will feel empathy for it and
everyone else will just see it as an ornament, but when instead of creating the statement
with just few members everyone contributes with their ideas, the mission will be the
representation of many thoughts and values and everyone will feel identified with it.
When creating a mission statement it is important to remember to keep it short because no
one will take time and effort to read anyway if not, as I mentioned above a feedback from
all the people involved in the organization could be a great way to integrate everyone and
encourage them to make a commitment to what is written in the statement, after gathering
all the information a small group representing the organization can brainstorm the best way
to accommodate all the info, it is important to make the mission statement as clear as
possible and be sure that when anyone reads it they can have a wide idea of what the
organizations is and what it does.
Finally there are many benefits of creating a great mission statement, for example it can be
used as marketing material and when customers read it they can be identified with the
company, it is the introduction of the organization to the world, and when new members
arrive to the company it can be used as a tool for creating empathy and commitment.
