Atop it, crumbling Pantheon. Slightly beneath: that is Me. Parnassus. Flying between the two mountains is the legendary winged steed, Pegasus. Inthe {foreground of this maura, nine muses, replete with tambourines, lutes and flutes, dance ‘and frolic. nthe lower left corner, an odd anachronistic touch, the Pan-Pacific ‘auditorium. Standing before (or above) the painting and very much alive, i the mortal ‘Sonny Malone, He is handsome and very 1980's. He is painting the mural and refers from time to time to the drawing he holds in his hands. Sonny looks at his mural and his piece of paper. He stops, he looks areund atthe audience.) SONNY Ob hey. I didn’t know you guys were here. A whole bunch of you, even like a crowd. (he stands up and walks tothe audience) But how much do [love when that happens, right? Like when people, regular people, walking along the nice California beach in Venice here, just stop and look at 1 chalk mural on the wall (or “sdewalk"). For me, lke, that’s when artis. Just proves that art isn't forthe well-educated, or the intelligent but people like you. (ie Looks back atthe rl) {call this piece, “The Ancient Greek Arty Chicks." I did a ton of research, took a book out ofthe library and everything, (Ge Tooks back atthe painting) The blonde in the mile isn’t quite right. (ack to the audience) Never mind. The important thing is that we have all gathered together to take part ian artistic experience and —The girl up front and center is all wrong. Ugh. It destroys the whole composition — {ruin everything I dol! Il never get it right, never, never, never — UGH, MEGA- BUMMER ~ What the hell, guys like me shoulda’t dream anyway. (He rips the drawing up and throws it atthe mural and storms off. The sound ofstaticy rock music, As the vamp to “I’M ALIVE” begins, the figures onthe mural come to life «and dance they then fly fom the painting into human form and sing “’M ALIVE") MUSES PM ALIVE! Xawanw THALIA, EUTERPE, ERATO AND THE WORLD SHINES FOR ME TODAY. MUSES YM ALIVE! THALIA, EUTERPE, ERATO SUDDENLY I AM HERE TODAY. THALIA SEEMS LIKE FOREVER MUSES AND A DAY. BUTERPE ‘THOUGHT | COULD NEVER MUSES FEEL THIS WAY ERATO IS THIS REALLY ME? MUSES YM ALIVELYM ALIVE! YM ALIVE! Kira [Cio] then appears frome the mural and joins her sisters in song and dance, then:) KIRA MUSES SUDDENLY CAME THE DAWN FROM THE NIGHT SUDDENLY I WAS BORN INTO LIGHT HOW CAN IT BE ME? KIRA & MUSES YM ALIVE! 'M ALIVE! YM ALIVE! KIRA (speaking, as all the muses do, as if she had only recently graduated from Julliard) Sister muses. Come join me where the land embraces the sea, OTHER MUSES (pearking in unison as recent Julliard graduates) Huzzah to Clio, muse of all histories! KIRA Huzzah to you, my sisters! We have come to achieve our noble task, we muse sisters nine. OTHER MUSES. ‘Speak unto us, Sister Cliot KIRA ‘There is an artist who needs our inspiration to achieve truly great work. For ‘whenever a mortal as the creative instinct, he soon after has the feeling of doubt. OTHER MUSES True dat Sister Clio. KIRA Word. She speks with an Australian acent fr the rest of our show.) (KIRA) Grday mate. (The other muses scream and act as if they have no idea where she i.) Over here! G'day! (The sisters are impressed with a communal “oo00dk!”) ERATO By the gods, that is an impenetrable disguise! KIRA 1 tell you sisters, by the fires of Hephaestus—1 mean, by the fires ofall the shrimp on the barbie shall help this Sonny Malone to flfill his destiny! Okay, how about this? “For I could have told you, Sonny Malone, this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.” (Oh, damn, now I'm plagiarizing Don McLean, All right, Il keep it simple; “Here ‘was an artist who tried and failed.” There, that oughta make ‘em ery. Kanan -13- Scone 3 (Thali, Erato, Euterpe, Terpsicore, Calliope and Melpomene enter) EUTERPE Oh, sisters, rejoice! OTHER MUSES We rejoice, we rejoice with abandon!
