Short Answer Questions

3. Emma and Kat were training for their school sports day carnival for the 800m
run. Emma always thought she was fitter than Kat, while Kat always thought she
was fitter than Emma so they decided to conduct an experiment to see who was
fitter.
Both Emma and Kat wore heart rate monitors and recorded their heart rate at
rest before running 800m, immediately after exercise and then every 30 seconds
after exercise for 3 minutes. Emmas recordings were 70, 182, 178, 170, 150,
130, 115, 100 bpm. Kats recordings were 77, 185, 180, 176, 170, 160, 150, 140.
Using the data above, set out a table to compare Emma and Kats heart rate.
Make sure to include title and units of measurement.

(6 marks)

4. Emma showed Kat the data table with the recordings and tried to convince Kat
that Emma was in fact the fitter athlete, but Kat had trouble seeing why just by
looking at the table.
a) Using the data from question 4, graph the data on the paper below. Make
sure you use labels and title and include a line of best fit.

b) Explain who is fitter between Emma and Kat by referring to the graph above.

5. Sally is about to compete at her schools sports day carnival in the 1500m race.
She wants to break the school record of 4 minutes and 30 seconds.
a) Convert 4 minutes and 30 seconds into seconds.

b) Calculate how fast, in meters/second, Sally will have to run to equal the
school record.

c) If Sally wanted to run 10 seconds faster than the school record, how much
faster would she have to run?

d) Calculate the time, in minutes, Sally would take to complete the 1500m race
if she were to run at 4m/s.

5. Sally is about to compete at her schools sports day carnival in the 1500m race.
She wants to break the school record of 4 minutes and 30 seconds.
a) Convert 4 minutes and 30 seconds into seconds.
4.3 x 60
4.3 minutes = 270 seconds
b) Calculate how fast, in meters/second, Sally will have to run to equal the
school record.
Average speed = distance/time

Average speed = 1500/270

= 5.56m/s
c) If Sally wanted to run 10 seconds faster than the school record, how much
faster would she have to run?
1500/260
= 5.77m/s
She would have to run .21m/s faster
d) Calculate the time, in minutes, Sally would take to complete the 1500m race
if she were to run at 4m/s.
Time = distance/speed
1500/4
= 375 seconds
= 6 minutes and 25 seconds
