Midterm Examination
Fall 2013
Course Number:
ECE 105
Professor:
If you do not circle the correct lecture section we will not be able to give you your midterm back
Date of Exam:
Oct 19 2013
Time Period:
2:45 4:45
Duration of Exam:
2 hours
10
Aids Allowed:
Attempt all 8 questions. Hand marked (15 marks each). Parts of equal value unless indicated
You will be graded on the step by step development of your solution. You must show the full detail
and the reasoning for your work. Incorrect reasoning will not be given credit. If an answer cannot
be found using the data given please state so.
1. Write your answers with units (unless inappropriate) in the spaces provided whenever applicable.
2. If you need more space, use the back of the previous page, BUT please leave a note directing the marker to
any such extra work.
3. To earn full marks, your solutions must show your reasoning. Correct answers without any
appropriate reasoning or with unreadable reasoning will not be awarded credit.
4. Make sure your calculator is in either radians or degrees, as required. If you use a programmable calculator,
make sure that the memory is cleared.
5. Ask a proctor to clarify a question if you think it is necessary. If the student proctor cannot
answer your question satisfactorily, ask him / her to call the Professor.
6. Assume any data that is given is accurate to as many significant figures as necessary.

Question 1
F. Mansour is curios. He wakes up at the edge of a very high cliff. For whatever reason he also finds a
brown sphere next to him and lots of ashes. He throws the brown sphere straight up in the air and notices
that 3 seconds later the sphere is about 1.00 m below his hand on its way down.
a)
What is the maximum height reached by the sphere above his hand? (6 marks)
b) During the last second of its flight the sphere covers of the total vertical distance it dropped
from the highest point. What is the distance between the highest point and the point of impact.?
(9 marks)

Question 2
Two friends come across an abandoned castle. One finds a cannon that fires soft rubber balls 30 m away
(horizontally) from the base of 10 m high wall and the other stands at the top of the wall. The one with
the cannon fires a shell towards his friend at the same time as the friend, at the top of the wall, leaps over
and free falls vertically down. The cannon ball hits the wall 1 m above the friend as he lands in the water
at the base of the wall.
a) How fast was the ball when it left the cannon (8 marks)
b) What angle was the cannon aimed at above the horizontal at when it was fired. (7 marks)

Question 3
Usain Bolt runs the 100 m in 9.8 s. he has constant acceleration for the first 50 m and constant speed for
the remaining 50 m.
c) He now runs the full length of the circular 400 m track which ends at the starting point.
Assuming the same magnitude of constant acceleration as in part (a) but for a duration that
allows him to reach only 70 % of speed as in part (b), what is his average speed and his average
velocity?

Question 4
A car drives around a curve of radius R banked at angle , where the coefficient of static friction is .
The car is driving at the minimum speed it can before slipping down the incline.
a) Draw the free body diagram and break down the forces along chosen axes.
b) Write down the equations of motion along the axes chosen in part (a).
c) Find the minimum speed of the car such the car does not slide on the track.

Question 5
a) Two Forces ! = 1, 2, 3 and ! = 4, 5, 6 act on a ball of mass m= 10 kg. What third
force must be acting on the ball if its acceleration is given by (1, 2, 3) m/s2 ?
a) Give the angles , , and that this force makes with the x, y, and z axes respectively.
Answer in degrees. (3 marks)

Question 6
From left to right the vertical hanging masses are 4m, 3m and 2m respectively. The mass M sits on the
horizontal surface of the fixed table where the coefficient of static friction is .
Two of the pulleys in the figure (the ones attached to 4m and 3m )
M
are movable, the rest are fixed.
a) Find m in terms of M and so M is on the
verge of moving on the table.
Fixed table
(does not move)

Question 7
Mass M= 20 kg sits on the 54 degree incline where the
coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.15. M is connected to
the rope which runs over the pulley and is attached to a
spring with spring constant k= 290 N/m. The spring is attached
to the wall. The system is held in place at the position shown
with the spring un-stretched. The angle of the incline is
measured from the horizontal.
a) Using the work-kinetic energy theorem find the maximum distance by which the spring will be
stretched when the system is let go. (7 marks)

Question 8.
The dome shown of mass M (semicircular top of radius R) is being pushed on a frictionless surface with
a horizontal force F (arrow). Where would M. Piani (of mass m), wanting to experience the wilder side
of life, sit on the left side of the dome so he is on the verge of slipping if the coefficient of static friction
between M. Piani and the surface is . (how far below the top, measured vertically) . Assume the force is
not too large and that there will be a point on the left side where he does not slide.
