In the story Tell Tale Heart by Edger Allen Poe, he creates suspense in multiple

scenes. For example, Poe uses the technique of using vivid words to describe the scene. He
writes, Presently I heard a slight groan, and I knew it was the groan of mortal terror. It
was not a groan of pain or grief-oh, no!-it was the low, stifled sound that arises from the
bottom of the soul when overcharged with awe. I knew the sound well. (84). This scene
creates suspense by describing the sound of the groan, such as describing it as a low and
stifled groan. Also he describes it not as a groan of pain or grief but of terror. Poe also
uses the technique of describing a character's fear and/or anxiety. He states, No doubt
I now grew very pale;-but I talked more fluently, and with a heightened voice. Yet the
sound increased-and what could I do? It was a low, dull, quick sound-much such a sound as

a watch makes when enveloped in cotton. . (87). This scene creates suspense by the
main character expressing his fear in such a way that describing how his attitude changes
when he hears the old mans heart beating. In conclusion, Poe uses vivid words and
describing characters fears to create suspense in Tell Tale Heart.
