2. Objectives

2.1 To form 3 different functions of the curve of the concrete structure.

2.2 To find the area of the concrete structure to be painted
2.3 To estimate the cost of concrete in difference structures.
2.4 Determine which structure has the minimum cost.
2.5 Determine the structure to be chosen based on cost and other
aspects.
2.6 To observe the relation between k and area to be painted
2.7 To express the area to be painted, A in terms of k and the value of A
when k approaches the value of 4.
2.8 To predict the shape of A when k approaches the value of 4.

3. Problem Solving

a) Based on different points of reference, there are three different functions can
be written:

1. -2 O 2
General form:

(0, -0.5) f(x) = -ax2 - 0.5

(-0.5) = -a(2)2 - 0.5

a = 0.125
(2, -1)
-1 Hence, f(x) = -0.125 x2 0.5

y
2.
OO 2 4 General form:
x
f(x) = -a (x - b)2 + c
(2, -0.5)
f(x) = -a (x - 2)2 - 0.5

-1 = -a (0 2)2 - 0.5

-1 a = 0.125

Hence, f(x) = -0.125(x -2)2 0.5

y

3.
-4 -2 O General form:
x
f(x) = -a (x + b)2 + c
(-2, -0.5)
f(x) = -a (x + 2)2 - 0.5

-1 = -a (0 + 2)2 - 0.5

-1 a = 0.125

Hence, f(x) = -0.125(x +2)2 0.5

b) The area to be painted:

4. Further Exploration

a) (i) The cost of concrete:

Structure 1:
Area of the surface = 2.667 m2

Volume of the concrete

4m
0.5m = 2.667m2 X 0.4 m
m = 1.0668 m3
1m
Cost of the concrete
= 1.0668 m3 X RM840.00
= RM 895.44

Structure 2: Area of the surface

4m (0.5 +1). 2
= 2 = 3 m2.
0.5m 2
m 1m
Volume of the concrete
= 3 m2 X 0.4 m = 1.2 m3.

Cost of the concrete

= 1.2 m3 X RM840.00
= RM 1008.00

Structure 3: Area of the surface

(0.5 +1). 1.5

4m = 2 + (1X0.5)
2
0.5m = 2.75 m2.
m
1m Volume of the concrete
1m
= 2.75 m2 X 0.4 m = 1.1 m3.

Cost of the concrete

= 1.1 m3 X RM840.00
= RM 924.00
Structure 4:
Area of the surface
4m (0.5 +1). 1
0.5m = 2 + (2 X0.5)
2
m = 2.5 m2.
k
2m
Volume of the concrete
= 2.5 m2 X 0.4 m = 1.00 m3.

Cost of the concrete

= 1.00 m3 X RM840.00
= RM 840.00

Structure 4 has minimum cost. (RM 840.00)

a) (ii) Which structure to be chosen?

Structure Costs Comments/ shape

1 RM 895.44 Artistic and attractive
2 RM 1008.00 Too common and geometrical
3 RM 924.00
4 RM 840.00 ..

As the president of the Arts Club, I would like to choose the structure .
because:

b)
4m

0.5m
m
1m
k
b) (i)

k (m) Area to be painted (m2)

(correct to 4 decimal places)
0.00 3.00
0.25 2.94
0.50 2.88
0.75 2.81
2.00 2.50
2.25 2.44
2.50 2.38
2.75 2.31
3.00 2.25
3.25 2.19
3.50 2.13
3.75 2.06
4.00 2.00

(ii) It is find that when k increases, the value of area to be painted decreases.
But when k approach to 4, the value of area to be painted approach to 2.

c) Expression of the area (A) to be painted in terms of k

4-k
4m 2
0.5m
m
1m A1 = 0.5k
k

A2 = (0.5 + 1) . (4- k)
2 2
Area, A = A1 + 2 A2

= 0.5k + 2(0.5 + 1) . (4 - k)
2 2

= 0.5k + 1.5 (4 k)
2
A = 3 0.25k

Lim (3- 0.25k) = 3 0.25(4) = 2 m2.

k 4

When k 4, the shape of the concrete becomes a rectangle 4m X 0.5m.
