Flowers for Algernon Part 1 Questions

(Due Tuesday November 8)

Directions: Please answer the following questions in FULL sentences.

differentiate between the questions and answer. If a questions asks for
TEXTUAL EVIDENCE, please make sure you add a page #.

AFTER PROGRIS REPORT 3:


1. Why does Charlie say I never tell lies? What is he talking about?
Charlie says, I never tell lies? because whenever he tells lies, he gets caught.
A lady gave him some pictures, and told him to make up a story to go with
the picture. He said that he would not make up the story, because they story
would be a lie.
2. What does this say about his personality and intelligence?
This shows that Charlie has a good heart, because he doesnt want to tell a
lie, but it also shows that he is not very smart, because he doesnt realize that
coming up with a story isnt a crime.
3. Who is Algernon?
Algernon is a white mouse that test are done on.

4. What were Dr. Nemur and Dr. Strauss arguing about?

Dr. Nemur and Dr. Strauss were arguing about whether or not to use Charlie
in the experiment.
5. Charlie will be the first human being to ever have something happen to
him. What is it?
Charlie will be the first human to have his intelligence increased through an
operation.

6. Dr. Strauss tells Charlie not to worry about the operation. What is his
reasoning for this?
Dr. Strauss tells him not to worry because its science.
7. Dr. Strauss wants Charlie to concentrate on what in his journal entries?
Dr. Strauss wants Charlie to concentrate on how he feels and what he is
thinking in his journal.

8. What is Charlies opinion of Algernon now? Why does it change?
Charlie now hates Algernon. This changes, because Charlie has the operation
that should have made him smart, but Algernon still beat him.

Algernon. I hate that mouse. He always beats me.

9. Charlie says Joe and Frank are friends and they like him. What are Joe and
Frank really doing to Charlie?
Joe and Frank are really teasing Charlie, not being friends like Charlie
thought that they were.

10. What is a victory for Charlie?
A victory that Charlie has is beating Algernon for the first time. He continued
to beat Algernon, and that is when he realized that he actually was getting
smarter.

tester told me.

11. Why did Mrs. Kinnian run out of the room? What does this tell you about
how she feels about Charlie?
Mrs. Kinnian ran out of the room because she read in Charlies report how his
friends had been treating him. She said that she had an eyelash, but it
actually made her sad because she cares about Charlie.
12. List 3 improvements in Charlies intelligence from the beginning until the
end of Part I.
Charlie learned how to spell Progress Report.
Text Evidence #1: They took the bandijis from my eyes and head today so I
can make a PROGRESS REPORT. Dr Nemur who looked at some of my other
ones says I spell PROGRESS wrong and he told me how to spell it and REPORT
too.

Charlie learned how to use punctuation.
Text Evidence #2: I read the grammar book last night and it explanes the
whole thing. Then I saw it was the same way as Mrs. Kinnian was trying to tell
me, but I didnt get it. I got up in the middle of the night, and the whole thing
straightened out in my mind.

home. Its a funny thing I never knew that Joe and Frank and the others liked
to have me around all the time to make fun of me. Now I know what it means

when he realizes this?
Pulling a Charlie Gordon, means to do something stupid or to do something
that can be made fun of. When Charlie realizes this, he runs, throws up, and
feels ashamed.

Text Evidence: Algernon bit me. I visited the lab to see him as I do
occasionally, and when I took him out of his cage, he snapped at my hand. I
put him back and watched him for a while. He was unusually disturbed and
vicious.

Charlie views himself as a smart person, but since he knows that he is
deteriorating, he tries to enjoy the time that he has left.

thoughts in these progress reports. It is one of my few pleasures. However, by
all indications my own mental deterioration will be very rapid.

and grabbed him by the shirt and said leave him alone you lousy cracker or Ill
break your neck.
