WhatItIs?
Photovoicewasdevelopedasaprocessby
whichpeoplecanidentify,represent,and
enhancetheircommunitythroughaspecific
photographictechnique(Wangetal.,2000,
p.82).Photovoicegivesavoicetopeoplewho
normallydonothaveanyrealimpactonthe
decisions,andsometimesstructureandrules,
thatimpacttheireveryday(Amosetal.,2012).
Participantsareenabledwithexpressingtheir
experiencesthroughphotographsthey
themselveshavetaken.Thesephotographs
coupledwithwrittenphrases,sentencesor
paragraphs,connectsthemtotheircommunity
andpushesforchange(Wangetal.,2000).As
expressedbyWandetal(2012)Becausea
pictureisworthathousandwords,
(photographs)canbeapowerfulwaytohelp
othersunderstandandconnectwiththeissues

Why Use it?


On top of being used to promote integration
of students with Autism Spectrum disorder
and any other learning or physical
difference, Photovoice could also be used as
a second language tool (eg. French or
English Second Language class) and as a
class or school wide project in working
towards some kind of change in the school
or external community
Photovoice could create a safer space for
students that struggle with the second
language and may not participate or feel
that they do not have much impact in that
classroom.
This is also an excellent tool to provide
students with a voice in wanting a change
within the school, from dress codes to
