Computerized Crime
It is no secret that the increased use of computers in business has been accompanied by a
costly increase in computer crime. Last year more than 44 per cent of businesses suffered
at least one online attack. Computer hackers use their skills to obtain secret business
information. They steal confidential business records, customer lists, and corporate plans.
Kevin Mitnick, a computer hacker from California, obtained 20,000 usable credit card
numbers by breaking into the computer files of a credit card company. Less than one third
(1/3) of British businesses however dedicate time and resources to make their computer
systems safe.
Besides, the losses to victims of computer crimes are very high. According to the
commercial law firm, computer thefts would exceed $ 25 billion in 2005.In addition;
banks worry that hackers will learn how to transfer money out of their customers'
accounts. "Security is never one hundred per cent in any business," said Charles Buckley,
a bank spokes person.
