ALMOST 1 IN 5 ALBERTANS WOULD CONSIDER DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

November 21, 2016 (Ottawa, ON) A new Mainstreet/Postmedia poll nd almost 1 in 5 Albertans (18%)
would consider driving under the inuence of alcohol - if it was only for a short distance on a quiet road.
The Mainstreet/Postmedia Poll has a margin of error of +/- 1.96%, 19 times out of 20.
"Though these numbers are aected by social desirability bias they are concerning" said Quito Maggi,
President of Mainstreet Research. 8% of Albertans said they have driven under the inuence of alcohol with 48% saying this occurred in the last 5 years. Though driving under the inuence has led to horror story
after horror story it appears that hasnt been enough for some Albertans.
"When we asked Albertans if they would consider driving under the inuence if it was only for a short
distance on a quiet road we saw striking numbers. Only 14% said they would consider it in Edmonton while
18% said they would consider it in Calgary. The highest number, 19%, came from outside the two major
cities."
Few Albertans say they have driven under the inuence of marijuana - but those who have are primarily in
Edmonton (8%). With legalized marijuana becoming the new normal sooner rather than later there are
serious concerns about being able to properly detect impairment and educating the public about the risks
of consuming marijuana before driving.
Canada has the worst rates of roadway deaths linked to alcohol impairment according to a recent report
by the Centre of Disease Control. While Alberta has taken concrete steps to ght drinking and driving it
does appear there is still more work to do to change societal opinion, nished Maggi.

ONLY WE
CALLED
THE
LIBERAL
MAJORITY.

I recommend "Raiders of the Lost Campaign Arc," released Oct. 18, because its an interview
with a pollster that everyone who follows politics should hear. Quito Maggi, of Mainstreet Public
Research, was the only pollster I saw call the Liberal majority with such condence, a week
before we voted.
Maggi also has the distinction of being the guy who predicted the BC Liberals would win in 2013,
in deance of the majority of the polls.
His technique involves picking a true bellwether riding and polling it thoroughly. His explanation
for how he does it is well worth a listen and should be required research for anyone running a
political campaign. - Shannon Rupp, The Tyee, November 4th, 2015
