Calculation of Actions Due To Temperature Variation across the depth

In this case it is assumed that the super-structure is free to translate in the longitudinal direction and that
the steel and concrete have the same co-efficient of thermal expansion, sothat uniform changes of
temparature cause no stresses in the superstructure. Thus only the effects of temparature differences
through the depth of cross section is considered. The nominal temperature differences are shown in the
following pages.

The section is divided into six slices as shown. Stresses are calculated neglecting the effects of shear lag as
per the clause 5.4.1 of BS 5400 Part 5 and using the following properties.

DESIGN OF CONNECTOR WELD

11.1 Top Flange - Web Connection :

Total area (transformed) of top flange :

300*12+(2575*200)/10 =

Maximum load that the top flange can take : 55100*241.8/1e+03 =

Providing
8 mm
fillet weld on both side of the web.
(using high strength electrodes as per IS:815-1974 & designated as EXXX-51X)
Allowable stress in the weld:

(Cl. 506.6.2.2 of IRC:24-2001)

So, maximum load that the welds can take : 2*0.707*8*11250*131/1000 =

i.e. > 13323.2 kN. Hence OK.
11.2 Bottom Flange - Web Connection :
Total area of bottom flange :

450*25 =

Maximum load that the bot. flange can take: 11250*241.8/1e+03 =

Providing
8 mm
fillet weld on both side of the web.
(using high strength electrodes as per IS:815-1974 & designated as EXXX-51X)

12.

So, maximum load that the welds can take : 2*0.707*8*11250*131/1000 =

i.e. > 2720.3 kN. Hence OK.
DESIGN OF END DIAPHRAGM FOR JACK UP CONDITION
The superstructure is assumed to be lifted during bearing replacement by hydraulic jacks placed
pre-determined locations on the end diaphragms. The bridge shall be closed to all sorts of traffic
during this operations.
Total reaction on one bearing for DL+SIDL:

4548094
fcb = 1*(4548094+0*1,182.4)*487.5/487.5 =

Bending compression :
0.66*4548094*390/((4548094^1.4+390^1.4)^(1/1.4)) =
But >241.8MPa. Hence 241.8MPa.
12.4 Now, stresses in the diaphragm:
Bending tensile stress at top :

267.0*1e+06/1686290634*487.5 =

Bending compressive stress at bottom :

267.0*1e+06/1686290634*487.5 =
