1. What are nutrients? Give examples.
Answer: Nutrients are the substances that an organism
need for growth, repair and maintenance of its body.
Nutrients needed by the human body are proteins,
carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals.

What is roughage? Write its uses.

Answer: The fibrous indigestible material present in


our food is called roughage. Roughage helps us in the
following ways:
A. Roughage adds bulk to our food.
B. It helps us to get rid of indigestible food and
thus prevents constipation.
C. Roughage can absorb and retain water in the body.
3. Why does our body needs water?
Answer: A. Water transports substances and nutrients
inside the body.
B. Water regulates body temperature.
C. It helps to absorb nutrients from the
food.
7. What is a balanced diet?

Answer: The diet that contains adequate amount of all


the essential nutrients, roughage and water for the
proper growth and development of the body is called
balanced diet.
8. Define deficiency diseases.
Answer: A diseases that is caused due to the lack of
carbohydrates, fats, proteins, minerals and vitamins
in our diet is called deficiency diseases.
